Our Chancellor

anthony fields

Dr. Anthony Fields is the inaugural Chancellor of MacEwan University.

Born and raised in Barbados, Dr. Fields emigrated to Canada after studying natural sciences at the University of Cambridge. He graduated from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Medicine in 1974 and completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine and medical oncology at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Fields has had a long and distinguished career in medicine as a physician, teacher, researcher and administrator. Most recently, he was a professor of oncology at the University of Alberta and vice-president of cancer care for Alberta Health Services before retiring in 2011.

While the impact of Dr. Fields’s work extends beyond the province, across the country and around the world, he has always been committed to supporting care where people live. During his tenure with the Cross Cancer Institute, the Alberta Cancer Board and later Alberta Health Services, he led the development of the Community Cancer Network, enabling patients to receive chemotherapy treatment closer to home through a network of 11 community cancer centres.

Over the years, Dr. Fields has held many provincial and national voluntary and professional roles and has been recognized with several awards for his extensive work. In Alberta’s centennial year, he was named one of Alberta’s 100 Physicians of the Century, and in 2012, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada.

Chancellor Speaker Series

The Chancellor Speaker Series invites renowned experts to visit the university and share their unique perspectives that support the chancellor's vision.

Dr. Fields believes that positive change is something we must choose and work for. “The key to MacEwan’s future success,” he says, “involves achieving academic excellence in a way that remembers that education is all about people and approaches that future with humanity and compassion.”

The series will inspire discussion about issues that are important to both the chancellor and the communities the university serves. The series is also intended to raise the university's profile and reputation as a trendsetting and trend breaking institution—and as a thought leader in the community.
