Animal Care Technician
Research Services

The Office of Research Services supports the academic research mission of MacEwan University, providing assistance and services to faculty and students engaged in research, scholarly activity and creative achievement. Research Services includes the animal care and use program, research ethics, and research administration.

Reporting to the Director of Research Services, the Animal Care Technician is responsible for providing coordination and management of all animal facilities at MacEwan University. The position oversees daily operations of animal care facilities (primarily freshwater and marine systems), including monitoring and maintaining appropriate environmental conditions, providing daily care and husbandry, and overseeing animal acquisitions. The position works closely with consulting veterinarians, laboratory managers, the Research Ethics Coordinator, and supports the work of animal researchers, instructors, and the Animal Research Ethics Board.

MacEwan University is an undergraduate university with a small, primarily aquatic, animal care and use program. Research is conducted by faculty and undergraduate students.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; organizational and time management skills; excellent judgment and problem solving skills; strong technical laboratory and aquaculture maintenance skills; and knowledge of university research environments, including federal and provincial regulatory frameworks (e.g., Canadian Council on Animal Care, Animal Protection Act).

The successful candidate must have an Animal Health Technology Diploma or equivalent; be certified or enrolled in CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT); and have a minimum of one (1) year animal care experience including aquaculture. Equivalencies will be considered.

Note, this position works an alternative work week Thursday through Monday, and statutory holidays.

This position is included under the MacEwan Staff Association Collective Agreement.
