Animal Care and Biological Sciences Laboratory Technician
MacEwan University is an undergraduate university with a small, primarily aquatic, animal care and use program. Research is conducted by faculty and undergraduate students. The Office of Research Services supports the academic research mission of MacEwan University, providing assistance and services to faculty and students engaged in research, scholarly activity and creative achievement.
Reporting to the director, Research Services, the animal care and laboratory technician is responsible for providing coordination and management of all animal facilities at MacEwan University. The position oversees daily operations of animal care facilities (primarily freshwater and marine systems), including monitoring and maintaining appropriate environmental conditions, providing daily care and husbandry, and overseeing animal acquisitions. In this role, the position works closely with consulting veterinarians, laboratory managers, the Research Ethics Coordinator, and supports the work of animal researchers, instructors, and the Animal Research Ethics Board.
The position additionally has functional reporting to the Science Administrator for aspects related to technical assistance provided in the Department of Biological Sciences. The biological sciences technician role provides for the undergraduate student laboratories by planning and coordinating lab preparation; ordering supplies and services; managing materials budgets; maintaining equipment; and supporting faculty and senior student research.
The ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; organizational and time management skills; excellent judgment and problem solving skills; strong technical laboratory and aquaculture maintenance skills; and knowledge of university research environments, including federal and provincial regulatory frameworks (e.g., Canadian Council on Animal Care, Animal Protection Act).
The successful candidate must minimally have a Laboratory Technology Diploma in Animal Health, Biology or equivalent with extensive experience, BSc is preferred; and be certified or upon hire enrolled in CALAS Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT), WHMIS and First Aid certifications. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in animal care, specifically aquaculture, and the preparation of post-secondary laboratories
Note, this position works an alternative work week that includes weekends and statutory holidays.
This position is included under the MacEwan Staff Association Collective Agreement.
