Opera Workshop
A program of scenes and arias will be studied, directed and performed at the Conservatory and at other venues in Edmonton. Full opera performances will be decided at the discretion of the directorial staff. A movement/dance instructor will work with the students, and monologues will be assigned. Audition and competition repertoire will be assigned and practiced.
Lyric Diction
Lyric Diction is the essential study of the profound nature of language. The study of the sounds of language is the most important form of ear training for the singer.
Through the application of the International Phonetic Alphabet, singers and vocal coaches study the inherent sounds, timing, energy, assonance and consonance of poetry and texts from the 4 main languages of vocal repertoire: Italian, German, English, and French. Spanish, Russian and Ecclesiastic Latin will be touched upon, and all students of singing are advised to take classes in Italian, German and French.
The required reference text is The Singer’s Guide to Languages by Marcie Stapp, and will be available in the bookstore. Other materials will be provided, and 3 other texts are recommended.
Students will be required to perform works in the languages being studied. Poetry Partners will practice texts in class, and the formation of a Poetry Study Club is recommended. Students are encouraged to read source literary works including Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister and Faust, and other writings from the authors of their texts, ie. Louys, Beaumarchais, Rilke.
Vocal Repertoire Classes
Participants will have an opportunity to discuss and perform repertoire in a Masterclass setting. Repertoire will focus on Art Song literature, but will include Concert, Opera and Chamber Music repertoire.
Poetry Partners will be assigned and should meet weekly to translate texts together and to speak them out loud. Partners will be expected to perform poetic readings of texts during class, and in public performance.
Recitals are planned in and around Edmonton and at the Conservatory during the year.
Languages for Singers and Pianists
Learn the fundamentals of phonetics for art song and operatic repertoire in Italian, German, French and English, with emphasis on correct use of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) and idiomatic pronunciations. Diction and repertoire classes will alternate.
