Music provides a lifetime of enjoyment and builds a foundation that helps children succeed in all areas of life. For over 30 years, the Conservatory of Music has been introducing small groups of active pre-schoolers to the world of music through this Kodály-based music literacy program. Children joyfully discover the elements of music through nursery rhymes, traditional chants, singing games, folk songs, selected art music and movement activities. They learn contrasting concepts such as fast-slow and high-low using a variety of Orff instruments.
Music in Early Childhood is a 30-week daytime program that runs from September to May.
EACH TERM FEES: $195/15 weeks
Preparatory Class - Age 3
The fall term is parented: a time for parents and their little ones to discover rhymes, songs and games. It is a lovely class to dance and sing and cuddle. After the winter break it is the time to see how well the children do on their own.
Our instructors are aware of how diverse children behave in class settings. Some children cannot wait to engage with the teacher and the group, while others need their "Grown Up" to initialize all interaction. This is a time to recover aural traditions, share a tune and play some drums. Our instructors use puppets, books, songs, and all kinds of wondrous materials to discover the details in music.
Nursery Class - Age 4/5
This is a great class because at this age, the children have an innate enthusiasm for sharing. But it is especially magical because there is a certain amount of "Reading preparedness" in this class. We dance, we sing, we explore movement and imagination to invite the detail of music into the mind and body, and spirit of the child. Books, puppets and all kinds of materials make this a great class with lots of action.
Kindergarten class - Age 5/6
This is when the children's musical knowledge really takes off. New intervals and rhythmic patterns are introduced and notated. The children will be able to write down simple melodies and rhythms and create their own music. There is lots of action in this class too so it is great for active children.
