Distance Learning Exams

If you are taking a MacEwan distance/online course, the Exam Services Centre can support you through the exam process. The steps you take to book your exam depend on where you live. We encourage you to book your exam early, so you can write it on the day that best suits your schedule.

Select the Book Now icon and follow the steps for booking your exam.

Students living more than 100 km from Edmonton

If you live more than 100 km from Edmonton, follow these steps to make arrangements for writing your exam in your own community.

1. Log into the course Blackboard page

You can access your course using the Blackboard menu in myPortal.Macewan.ca. (You will be prompted to log in.)

2. Check the exam date range

Your instructor posts the date range on Blackboard. You have to write your exam within the posted date range.

3. Find an exam supervisor

The exam supervisor you choose must be:

  • a professor, instructor or professional staff member from a recognized post-secondary institution OR
  • a full-time professional staff member of a private or public school, public library or library within a school

The supervisor cannot be a friend, neighbor, family member or co-worker and cannot live at the same address as you.

4. Confirm the exam date, time and location with your supervisor

The location needs to be a room/space at your supervisor’s place of employment.

5. Complete and submit the Online Exam Supervision form

The Online Exam Supervision form needs to be completed at least five days prior to the exam date and then submitted to Exam Services. You can find the form in the Examination Guidelines section of your Blackboard home page. After you submit the form, the Exam Services Centre will contact the exam supervisor (whose information you've included on the form) and provide him/her with the exam and other details. The supervisor will contact you prior to the scheduled exam date.

6. Check for wired Internet connection and browser compatibility

To write online exams, you need to be working on a computer with a high speed-Ethernet (wired) connection. Wireless connections can be unreliable and, if you lose a connection, you will have to re-log into the exam again.

As well, check to make sure that the browser you will be using when you write the exam is compatible with Blackboard Learn. You can check the browser compatibility on the Brower Support page in Blackboard Help.

7. Write and, if needed, pay for the exam

Show up 10 minutes ahead of time to write the exam. You are responsible for all costs, if any, associated with off-site exam supervision.
