A virtual private network (VPN) is a secure connection between two points through the Internet. A VPN allows your home computer or off-site laptop to connect to MacEwan University network resources through a secure encrypted tunnel.
MacEwan University uses Cisco's AnyConnect VPN. AnyConnect is easy to install and easy to use.
Why You Need VPN
Through myPortal.MacEwan.ca, staff and faculty have single-sign-on access to most of the services they require, including Blackboard, GroupWise, and many PeopleSoft tasks. Tasks that would require VPN access if you are working off campus include:
--updating faculty web pages through secure FTP
--accessing the full application of PeopleSoft, to complete approvals for example
--accessing the GroupWise desktop client
All staff and faculty automatically have a VPN account enabled for them to use and do not need to apply for VPN access.
Contractors have to have their MacEwan University sponsor apply for VPN access on their behalf. Application forms are available from Tech Support. Contact us.
Installing AnyConnect VPN
To use the AnyConnect VPN access, you need to download and install the VPN plugin on the system you will be using. There are different instructions for different operating systems.
