Susan May brings an eclectic mix of academic credentials to the position of Associate Vice-President, Academic and Research, at MacEwan. She holds a Doctor in Education from the University of Toronto with a specialization in adult education, a Master of Continuing Education from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Administration from Athabasca University and a Bachelor of Social Work from University of Manitoba.
Susan has held a variety of academic and professional appointments at Canadian post-secondary institutions including Regional Coordinator at Athabasca University, Chair of the Master of Adult Education program at St. Francis Xavier University and Chair of the Social Services program at Arctic College. Susan’s teaching experience ranges from thesis supervision of masters students to tutoring of undergraduates and supervision of field practicums.
Susan May provides leadership to MacEwan International, the AGC Secretariat, the Research office, the Faculty Commons (educational technology, faculty development, academic integrity and faculty evaluation) and the Academic Quality Assurance and Accreditation portfolio.
In her role of AVPAR she chairs the Academic Policy Committee and the Sabbatical Leave Committee and serves on the Research Council, the MacEwan Curriculum Committee, Deans and Director Committee and Academic Leadership Team.
Susan is the institutional liaison with the Campus Alberta Quality Council Secretariat and has signing authority on all programs of study and course syllabi.
Through collaboration internally with students, faculty and staff and externally with agencies, governments and sister institutions, Susan May works to forward the university’s research, international and curriculum goals. Her key accomplishments since assuming the position in 2004 has been to establish a Quality Assurance and Accreditation unit, set strategic directions for mission critical program and faculty evaluation systems, create business processes and infrastructure to increase capacity, expand international initiatives, and manage academic change processes. She has been instrumental in supporting peer review processes at MacEwan through curriculum committees, ethics policies, evaluation processes and program approval framework.
