Dr. Janet Paterson-Weir is the Provost and Executive Vice-President, Academic of Grant MacEwan University. Janet’s educational credentials include an Ed.D in Administration from Nova Southeastern University, a Masters degree in Psychopedagogy from the University of Ottawa, a Bachelor of Arts from York University in Political Science and Economics, a Business Diploma from Ryerson University, and a Type B Permanent Teaching Certificate from the University of Toronto.
Janet has held the position of Dean of the School of Business and Applied Arts at Algonquin College in Ottawa, and has international program development experience in Thailand, Russia and Ukraine as well as teaching experience in Hong Kong and South Africa.
Janet is the 2009 recipient of the Paul Elsner International Leadership Award from the Chair Academy.
Janet provides organizational and strategic academic direction to the university as Provost and Chief Operating Officer. Janet chairs the Executive Leadership Team of the University, the Academic Leadership Team, Deans and Directors Team, and the Academic Governance Council.
Her operational responsibilities include the Academic Schools of the University, the Library, the Office of the Chief Information Officer and the University’s Strategic Planning Office. Under Janet’s leadership, MacEwan has expanded its enrolment, successfully introduced new credentials, and created technology support that operates around the clock.
Janet has combined her personal interest and experience in distance education with a focus on provincial collaborations and consortium building. Janet has worked as a founding member of Ontario Learn and eCampus Alberta.
Currently Janet’s curriculum priority includes setting a direction towards horizontal curriculum models wherein learners access various levels of credentials from diploma to degree to post degree diploma, full time, part time and online. Janet has supported initiatives to improve educational quality, increase access and build capacity.
