Mandate
The Research Council:
Advises the University community on research policy and supports faculty in making a contribution to their disciplines and the wider world, informing teaching and learning.
Takes a leadership role in encouraging an environment in which research will flourish and enrich teaching and learning at MacEwan University.
Encourages and values all forms of faculty research and scholarly activity. In this sense, “research” shall refer to all forms of research, scholarly activity and creative achievement.
Role
To take a leadership role on policy development relating to research.
To assume responsibility for strategic planning related to research at MacEwan University.
To facilitate research that will align with the mandate of the university and be credible to external agencies.
To provide orientation and support to faculty.
To administer the internal MacEwan Faculty Research, Scholarly Activity Creative Achievement Fund using a peer review process to adjudicate applications.
To liaise with Schools and Faculties to increase the capacity for research.
To foster student involvement in research.
To collaborate internally and externally to support opportunities.
To profile the dissemination of faculty research internally and externally.
1. Mandate
1.1 The Research Council advises the University community on research policy and supports faculty in making a contribution to their disciplines and the wider world, informing teaching and learning.
1.2 The Research Council takes a leadership role in encouraging an environment in which research will flourish and enrich teaching and learning at MacEwan University.
1.3 The Research Council encourages and values all forms of faculty research and scholarly activity. In this sense, “research” shall refer to all forms of research, scholarly activity and creative achievement.
2. Role
2.1 To take a leadership role on policy development relating to research.
2.2 To assume responsibility for strategic planning related to research at MacEwan University.
2.3 To facilitate research that will align with the mandate of the university and be credible to external agencies.

3. Accountability
3.1 The Research Council is a committee of Academic Governance Council.
3.2 The Research Council will submit an Annual Report and Work Plan to Academic Governance Council and recommendations as required for the approval of Academic Governance Council.
4. Composition
4.1 The membership of the Research Council will reflect comprehensive representation of key stakeholders. A balance of membership from each School or Faculty is desired. The majority of Council members shall be faculty.
4.2 The Research Council shall consist of the following members, to be elected by Academic Governance Council:
a) Nine faculty members, with a minimum of one faculty member from each of the Faculties/Schools.
b) Two Deans/Associate Deans
4.3 The following will be ex-officio members of the Research Council:
a) University Research Officer
b) Associate Vice President Academic and Research
c) Director, Faculty Commons
5. Terms of Office
5.1 Members shall serve two-year terms, except for those serving by virtue of their positions. Terms may be renewed once.
5.2 Membership is rotating with half of members elected in alternate years.
5.3 Past members may return after an absence of one term.
5.4 Members are required to attend 2/3rds of meetings per year to maintain membership on the committee.
6. Committee Operations
6.1 The Research Council will be chaired by a faculty member of the committee, selected by the committee.
6.2 The Research Council will meet monthly, as required, from September to June.
6.3 The Committee may create subcommittees, working groups, and adjudication panels as required.
6.4 Administrative support is provided through the office of the Associate Vice-President Academic and Research.
6.5 Meeting notes shall be filed with the AGC Secretariat.
