- Encourages and values all forms of faculty research and scholarly activity. In this sense, “research” shall refer to all forms of research, scholarly activity and creative achievement.

1.1 The Research Council advises the University community on research policy and supports faculty in making a contribution to their disciplines and the wider world, informing teaching and learning.
1.2 The Research Council takes a leadership role in encouraging an environment in which research will flourish and enrich teaching and learning at MacEwan University.
1.3 The Research Council encourages and values all forms of faculty research, scholarly activity, and creative activity.
1.4 The Research Council promotes the integration of teaching and research by encouraging faculty members to share their research outcomes and interests in the classroom.
1.5 The Research Council encourages faculty members in developing research initiatives rooted in their work with students.
2.1 To take a leadership role on policy development relating to research.
2.2 To assume responsibility for strategic planning related to research at MacEwan University.
2.3 To facilitate research that will align with the mandate of the university and with an objective to secure external funding.
2.4 To provide guidance on strategic funding priorities for internal research funds.
2.5 To support Faculties/ Schools to enhance research capacities.
2.6 To foster student involvement in research.
2.7 To collaborate internally and externally to support research opportunities.
2.8 To profile the dissemination of faculty research internally and externally.
3.1 The Research Council is a standing committee of Academic Governance Council.
3.2 The Research Council will submit an Annual Report and Work Plan to Academic Governance Council and recommendations as required for the approval of Academic Governance Council.
4.1 The membership of the Research Council will reflect comprehensive representation of key stakeholders. A balance of membership from each Faculty/School is desired. The majority of Council members shall be faculty. In the event that the AGC Nominations Committee cannot secure desired membership from each Faculty/School, the number of faculty positions available for nomination may be redistributed to one of the other Faculties/Schools, to ensure the total sought after faculty membership.
4.2 The Research Council shall consist of the following members, to be elected by Academic Governance Council:
a) Nine faculty members, with a minimum of one faculty member from each of the Faculties/ Schools and Professional Resource Faculty
b) Two Deans/Associate Deans
c) One student appointed by the Students’ Association of MacEwan University
4.3 The following will be ex-officio members of the Research Council:
a) Director of Research Services
b) Provost and Vice President Academic, or designate
d) Executive Director, Centre for the Advancement of Faculty Excellence
5. Terms of Office
5.1 Elected Members shall serve two-year terms. Terms may be renewed once.
5.2 Membership is rotating with half of members elected in alternate years.
5.3 Past members may return after an absence of one term.
5.4 Members are required to attend two-thirds of meetings per year to maintain membership on the Committee, except for School of Continuing Education faculty members.
6. Committee Operations
6.1 The Research Council will be chaired by a faculty member of the Committee, selected by the Committee.
6.2 The Research Council will meet monthly, as required, from September to June.
6.3 Quorum is set at a simple majority of voting members. Ex-officio and School of Continuing Education faculty members do not count toward or against quorum.
6.4 The Committee may create subcommittees, working groups, and adjudication panels as required.
6.5 Research Services shall provide administrative and resource support to the Research Council.
6.6 The Provost and Vice President Academic is the ex-officio senior administrator who provides executive advice and support as needed.
6.7 Meeting notes shall be filed with the AGC Secretariat.
