Purpose and Accountability:
The Distance and Distributed Education (DDE) Committee reports, as a decision assist body, through the Committee's administrative chair (the Director, Learning and Instructional Services) to the Executive Vice-President, Academic (EVPA). The EVPA represents the DDE Committee at Executive Committee.
To ensure informed recommendations, the Committee's membership is drawn from key stakeholders; the administrative chair is also a member of the Academic Leadership Team; and a committee representative serves on the MacEwan Technology Council.
The DDE Committee provides a forum to share information and to discuss, resolve and recommend on distance and distributed learning issues and opportunities.
Scope:
Distance and Distributed Education is a broad term that refers to the complex system of designing, delivering, and administering a program of study, which occurs in a different mode than the traditional teacher/student/classroom setting.
Distance and Distributed Education demands the creative arts of course design so that learners will increase their knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values to meet the Master Course Syllabus content standards.
1.0 Mandate
1.1 The Distance and Distributed Education (DDE) committee provides a forum to share information and to discuss, resolve, and recommend on distance and distributed education needs, directions, issues, and opportunities.
1.2 The committee collaborates with other Grant MacEwan University areas and committees to facilitate the development and promotion of DDE education and learning.
1.3 The committee is responsible for the awarding and administration of the MacEwan Online Course Development and Maintenance Fund.
2.0 Accountability
2.1 The DDE Committee is a subcommittee of MacEwan’s Academic Governance Council (AGC).
2.2 The Committee Chair will report on the committee’s activities to AGC and submit recommendations as required for the Academic Governance Council’s consideration.
3.0 Composition
3.1 The Distance and Distributed Education committee shall consist of the following:
a) Six faculty members with DDE experience. Normally there shall be at least one member from each faculty/school, to be elected by the Academic Governance Council
b) Two students (preferably with DDE experience), to be appointed by the Students’ Association
c) Chief Information Officer
d) Director, Faculty Commons
e) Director, Corporate Learning
f) Director, Centre for Professional Nursing Education
g) Coordinator, Online Learning & Resource Development
h) Distance & Distributed Education Coordinator, Faculty of Health and Community Studies
i) A faculty member from each of the following service/support departments: Library and Student Services, to be appointed by their respective Director.
3.2 The following will be non-voting resource members of the Distance and Distributed Education committee:
a) Four Academic Departmental Facilitators, to be appointed by their respective Dean
b) A representative from each of the following service/support departments: Information and Technology Services and Registrar’s Office, to be appointed by their respective Director
4.0 Terms of Office
4.1 The Chair will be chosen by members of the committee.
4.2 Members will have ongoing appointments subject to annual renewal by the respective Dean/Director or AGC.
5.0 Operations of Committee
5.1 Information and Technology Services will provide administrative support to the DDE Committee.
5.2 The Committee shall meet a minimum of 6 times per year.
5.3 The Committee may strike sub-committees as required in order to do its business.
5.4 Meeting minutes shall be filed by the AGC Secretariat and posted to the Academic Affairs website and MacEwan staff intranet.
