2012 Corus Entertainment Distinguished Lecture
Canadian publisher extraordinaire brings one-man show to MacEwan stage
MacEwan University’s School of Communications is proud to welcome Douglas Gibson to the John L. Haar Theatre, March 2, 2012. A lively account of his 40 years in publishing, Stories About Storytellers is an engaging stage show adapted from Gibson’s first book by the same name.
During his impressive career in publishing, including 16 years at the helm of Canada’s top literary house McClelland & Stewart, Gibson worked with some of the leading journalists, politicians and authors of his era. From Alice Munro, Robertson Davies and Alistair MacLeod, to Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney and W.O. Mitchell, Gibson has edited and published some of the country’s sharpest minds and greatest storytellers.
Described as a terrific storyteller himself, Gibson recalls the authors he got to know throughout his career. Thus, audiences will be able to get an inside view of Canadian politics and publishing that rarely gets told.
During the show, each of the 21 authors he discusses will appear on a central screen behind him, in a lively caricature. Bursts of music also enliven the 65-minute free show. Almost 20 versions of Stories About Storytellers were given across the country in the fall of 2011. David Cheoros, the Director of Edmonton Litfest, calls him “a living link to the foundation of our country’s literature and also an impish and charming performer. His lifelong passion for these writers is contagious.”
