GPA CALCULATIONS
There are several different types of GPA calculations. At MacEwan, we employ the following most commonly:
A Grade Point Average (GPA) is a weighted average calculated by dividing the sum of all grade points by the sum of all credits attempted. Note that notations of W – withdrawal – or TR – transfer – are not included in any GPA calculation.
GPA = sum of (grade point values x course credits attempted)
/sum of course credits attempted
Or = sum of grade points/sum of course credits attempted
Term GPA: The term GPA is calculated by dividing the sum of grade points achieved in a term by the sum of all credits attempted in that term. A term GPA shows on the transcript.
Academic Standing GPA: The term GPA is also the Academic Standing GPA. Students who have a Term GPA of less than 2.0 are placed on Academic Probation. A student is Required to Withdraw (RTW) when they meet one of the following conditions:
- Term GPA below 1.50 for two consecutive terms.
- Term GPA below 1.50 for two non-sequential terms where the student had no enrolment in the terms between.
- Term GPA below 2.00 for three consecutive terms.
- Term GPA below 2.00 for three non-sequential terms where the student had no enrolment in the terms between.
Cumulative GPA (CGPA): The CGPA is calculated by dividing the sum of total grade points achieved at MacEwan by the sum of all credits attempted at MacEwan. The CGPA also shows on the transcript.
Graduation GPA (GGPA): The GGPA is calculated by dividing the sum of all grade points achieved and counted towards a program credential by the sum of all those credits.
In determining the GGPA, the following explanatory notes are necessary:
- In any given program of study, if a student has an option or elective to fill, a student can substitute a low or failing grade for these options or electives with a grade from a different option or elective. MacEwan uses the course with the highest grade and then defaults to the first course taken. For example, if a student had one option to take, but the student took 2009WI SOCI 100 D, 2009SP PSYC 104 B+ and 2009FA MGMT 111 B+, we would use the PSYC 104 grade. As PSYC is the only one of these courses used towards the program credential, the other credits are “extra to credential” and are not calculated in the GGPA.
- In addition, the following notations are not calculated in the GGPA: TR transfer credit, AU audit and W withdrawal.
- If a course is repeated as per the regulations of C1015, we will take the best grade to fulfill the program requirements; the best grade is also used in the GGPA calculation.
