Overview
Effective Sept 2001, Grant MacEwan University will have a code of WF (Failure to Withdraw). The code of WF is intended for students who wish to withdraw after the academic withdrawal deadline, but in a definite period of time before exams and/or final projects. The code of WF is not intended for students who inquire about a medical withdrawal nor for students who complete a final examination and/or any type of final project, etc. The code of WF calculates as a 0 for grade point purposes, and this 0 will be calculated on the full credit weight of the course.
The code of WF can be assigned for credit courses only.
According to the revised Grading Policy C 2020, a code of WF is assigned by the Registrar upon submission and review of a withdrawal form. Program or outreach areas may not submit this form on behalf of any student; a student signature is required for this transaction.
The code of WF will not be granted retroactively; it is effective for the Fall 2001 term and forward.
Procedures
Students must complete a course and/or program withdrawal form after the last day to withdraw without academic penalty and within a certain period of time prior to the first day of exams in any term (10 calendar days prior for Fall and Winter, 5 calendar days prior for Spring and Summer).
Applying for a grade of WF must be indicated in the comment section on the withdrawal form.
The code of WF can be applied only towards a final grade, not a lab exam, etc. In the case of courses with a lab and a final exam or a project and a final exam, the date will be calculated back from the first day of final exams (for the lecture).
Distance Delivery Courses
In the case of distance delivery courses, students must complete a course withdrawal form 10 calendar days prior to the last date of the course. However, any student who has completed a final project or final examination will not be eligible to receive a code of WF. The Associate Registrar will verify the status of any final work with the program or outreach area before granting any WF. Distance delivery students will be notified if the code of WF is granted or not.
