Classics is the study of ancient Greek and Latin art, culture, history, literature and religion and their effects on subsequent and contemporary civilizations. The study of Classics helps provide a solid background and better understanding of many of the disciplines in the Arts and Social Sciences. It is a particularly valuable component of a liberal education.
Training in Classics helps students develop skills in oral and written expression; it gives students a greater understanding of western artistic, literary and philosophical traditions. Classics develops well-rounded students capable of critical thought, articulate argumentation and considered reasoning.
Classics at MacEwan is taught in small classes by experienced instructors, most of whom are engaged in new and original research in their respective fields. The interaction, attention, and personal contact offered at MacEwan are the ideal context for the intense study of ancient culture called for by classics.
The course list identifies approved courses that MacEwan may offer. Not all courses will be offered every year and some courses are restricted to particular programs. Contact an advisor in your program for information on course availability.
Spring 2012
Class 355: Leisure, Work and Death in Ancient Rome (Otium, Negotium, Morsque Romana)
Study in Rome and visit Pompeii, Tarquinia and Cerveteri, Praeneste and Ostia... all in 21 days. CLAS 355 will be offered in early May, 2012. In addition to course work offered at the City Centre Campus before the trip (dates tba), students will spend 21 days traveling to unique and famous Roman destinations.
Students will visit museums and famous historical sites like the Pantheon, Colisseum and the Roman Forum. We will also make excursions to Tarquinii, Palaestrina, Ostia (both ancient Ostia and the modern beach). A day trip to Pompeii will include visits to the famous Villa of the Mysteries and the House of Sallust. More modern sights like the Spanish Stairs, the Trevi Fountain and St. Peter’s Basilica will be featured too. There is no substitute for real pizza and gelato eaten in Rome! For all this you should expect to pay between five and six thousand dollars, including MacEwan tuition and fees, flights, accomodations (with two meals a day and wine), transit pass, and most museum entrance fees.
