In addition to teaching opportunities, the Bachelor of Education degree is becoming more recognized and valued in the business community and also acts as an excellent foundation for graduate school.
The education transfer stream
Education programs differ greatly from province to province, and even among institutions within the same city. MacEwan University's education transfer stream is structured to align most closely with the University of Alberta's Bachelor of Education degree. If you intend to transfer to another institution, you should consult admission and degree requirements for your intended program prior to application to MacEwan University.
Elementary or secondary route
The Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta is divided into an elementary education (Kindergarten - Grade 6) route and a secondary education (Grade 7 - Grade 12) route. Although all teachers in Alberta are certified to teach all grades from Kindergarten through Grade 12, it is extremely rare that teachers would be granted positions outside their area of specialization. You may begin coursework towards either the elementary or secondary education route at MacEwan University. Please consult the appropriate academic planning information for the route you to pursue. If you are unsure whether you want to pursue the elementary or the secondary route, it is better to plan for the secondary route, as it is a very structured degree program with no option courses.
The education transfer stream at MacEwan University offers a variety of course work toward most, but not all, major and minor teaching subjects. For further information, students are encouraged to contact an academic advisor in Program Services.
The course list identifies approved courses that MacEwan University may offer. Not all courses will be offered every year and some courses are restricted to particular programs. Contact an advisor in your program for information on course availability.
