Watch your myMail account for your invitation.

Several Academic Planning Sessions are held during the months before the start of the term. The following topics are covered:

  • Planning your degree
  • Choosing the right courses
  • Finding out how many courses you should take
  • Navigating which sections you can enrol in
  • Accessing university materials, services, and other help on campus
  • Calculating Grade Point Average (GPA) and understanding Academic Standing
  • Understanding university vocabulary: junior vs. senior level courses, Gateway exams, prerequisites, labs, etc.

You can sign up for a session if you have been accepted to the Bachelor of Education transfer program and have paid your deposit.

If you cannot attend a session because you live outside of the Edmonton area, you can still enrol in your classes through myStudentSystem. We encourage you to carefully review the information on this website before you enrol.

Get Your Planning Sheets

Using your planning sheets to help plan your degree is the first step in choosing your courses; it is also something that you will do throughout your degree to make sure you take the right courses and know when applying to the U of A is appropriate.

Bachelor of Education Transfer (Elementary)

Bachelor of Education Transfer (Secondary)

Declaring Your Major and/or Minor

B.Ed. transfer students do not declare their major and/or minor at MacEwan University. You will do this when you apply to the U of A’s Faculty of Education.

Choose Your Courses

To choose your courses you should first plan your degree. It is best to choose your courses from the Elements, your minor, or the education core in your first year if you are pursuing an Elementary route. If you are pursuing a Secondary route, you should choose courses from your major, minor, literacy requirement, or your education core courses. The information below will help you understand the basics about courses.

Courses Available to B.Ed. Transfer Students

Download the list of courses offered through the Faculty of Arts and Science during the fall 2012 and winter 2013 terms. You can only enrol in courses that can be used towards your B.Ed. degree requirements.

Course Descriptions

Course descriptions provide you with a brief overview of what you will study in a course, the course name and number, the credit value, and the prerequisites. The course description legend breaks down the structure of a course description. Course descriptions are available in myStudentSystem, on the Course List page or at the back of the Academic Calendar.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites

A prerequisite is a course that must be successfully completed with a grade of C- or better prior to attempting a subsequent course. The course description may also list co-requisites which are courses that must be taken along with another in the same term.

The Faculty of Arts and Science has the right to withdraw students from a course at any time if it is begun without the prerequisite or co-requisite or to withhold credit for that course, even when all other graduation requirements have been met.

Course Load

Course Load refers to the number of credits taken in a term. When choosing how many courses you should take in a term, consider the following.

  • All courses in the B.Ed. transfer program are 3 credits including PACT courses
  • To be a full-time student, you must enrol in 9 credits per term
  • The maximum course load allowed is 15 credits per term. You must apply for a Credit Overload to take more than 15cr per term.
  • If you are on a student loan, you must maintain enrolment in a minimum of 9 credits per term
  • You must enrol in a minimum of 3 credits in an academic year to remain in the BA/B.Ed. transfer program
  • You must enrol in a minimum of 3 credits in the first term you are accepted to the program

Language Courses

Check the language placement information to make sure you are enrolled in the correct course.

Junior and Senior Courses

Courses numbered 100-199 are considered junior-level
Courses numbered 200 and higher are considered senior-level

Minimum Grade Restrictions

The minimum passing grade at MacEwan University is D. However, to transfer a course to the U of A you must achieve a minimum grade of C-. Students transferring to the U of A may not repeat a course in which they have previously received a grade of C- or higher.

Even though the minimum passing grade for a course is a D, to be in good academic standing, you must maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) each term. Please refer to the Academic Standing policy (C2070) for details or speak with an advisor for help understanding the policy.

Enrol in Courses

myStudentSystem

You will enrol yourself in courses using myStudentSystem. To learn how to enrol in courses, check out the myStudentSystem step by step instructions.

You can add and drop classes online until the add/drop deadline each term. You can withdraw from a course without academic penalty if you do so before the withdrawal deadline.  Deadlines can be found in the Academic Schedule.

Section Numbers

A section number corresponds to the specific time and days a course is being offered.

For example, ENGL 102 is a course. There are many different classes of this course running during each term. The section number tells you which class you are enrolling in on specific days and at a specific time.

You can enrol in AS, GS, EX, or OP sections.

CourseSectionDays and Times
ENGL 102AS02MWF 1 - 2
ENGL 102AS47TR 12:30 - 2

Labs and Seminars

Certain courses have a lecture and a lab component or a separate seminar component. You must enrol in all components of a course.

To find out if a course has a lab or a seminar component, check your course description. The legend of a course description will show you where in the description you can find this information.

Prerequisite Checking in myStudentSystem

When you enrol, myStudentSystem will check for post-secondary prerequisites. If you have the prerequisite but myStudentSystem is preventing you from enrolling, contact Program Services immediately.

High school prerequsites will be checked by the Faculty of Arts and Science during the first month of the term. The Faculty of Arts and Science has the right to withdraw students from a course at any time if it is begun without the prerequisite or co-requisite or to withhold credit for that course, even when all other graduation requirements have been met.

You may enrol in a course in the winter term and complete the prerequisite course in the fall term. However, if you withdraw or fail to achieve a grade of C- in the prerequisite course, you must remove yourself from the winter term course immediately.

Prerequisites from another post-secondary institution

If you met a prerequisite by completing a course at another post-secondary institution, it is your responsibility to contact Program Services prior to enrolment.

Apply to Audit a Course

You do not receive credit in courses you audit. Students sometimes audit language courses if they feel they need to refresh their skills before attempting the course they are required to take. You will need to apply to audit a course before you can enrol.

Request PACT/PEDS Permission Numbers

Permission Numbers (PN)

Permission numbers allow you to enrol in certain restricted sections through myStudentSystem.

myStudentSystem may also require a PN to enrol in a course because it does not recognize your transfer credit as the prerequisite. Contact Program Services immediately if this is the case.

Note: You do not require a PN to enrol in AS sections of PEDS 100, PEDS 101, PEDS 103, PEDS 293, and PEDS 294. These sections are available through myStudentSystem.

A syllabus is distributed in the first class of each course. It is an official outline of what you can expect to learn in the course and what is expected of you. It will outline deadlines for assignments and required readings. Refer to your syllabus throughout the term.

Lockers

Lockers are available to full-time students. Remember to register and pay for your locker.

Dates and Deadlines

The Academic Schedule lists all the important dates and deadlines for the coming academic year including when classes start, tuition deadlines, add/drop deadlines, withdrawal deadlines, and exam periods.

University Policies

You must check the University Policies that affect your degree including the Academic Standing (C2070), Student Rights and Responsibilities (E3101), Grading (C2020), and Course Repeat (C1035) policies.

Academic Calendar

The authoritative source for official course descriptions and the rules and regulations that apply to MacEwan University students is the Academic Calendar.

You are strongly encouraged to familiarize yourself with the University of Alberta calendar or the calendar of the institution from which you intend to graduate. Reference copies of post-secondary calendars are available from the Student Resource Centre.

Prepare for Assignments and Exams

Get Set Up for Success!

MacEwan has many resources to help you succeed in your academic career. Don't wait until you are having problems to take advantage of these resources.

Strategies for Student Success (STSS)

These are a series of $10 workshops held in September each year focusing on Study Skills, Time Management, Essay Writing, Stress Management, and Exam Preparation. You can sign up for these workshops by searching for “STSS” on our Continuing Education Course Database.

Talk to Your Instructor

Talking to your instructors often about assignments or course content is a smart way to success in your courses. They are the experts on the content and will be marking your assignments. Don’t be shy! Your instructors’ office hours are listed on your course syllabus.

Final Exams

Check the exam schedule to find when and where your exams will be held. Exam schedules are also posted on campus outside the bookstore shortly before exams begin. The exam schedule can change during the term. You should consult your instructors as well as the exam schedule prior to the exam period for any changes. It is your responsibility to know when and where your final examinations are scheduled and to arrive on time.

Final Exam Deferrals

Requests for deferred final exams are considered only when you miss final examinations due to acceptable extenuating circumstances such as illness accompanied by a signed note from a doctor, death in the family, serious family crisis, accident, etc. You must request a deferred exam no later than 2 business days after the missed examination. Permission to defer a final exam is not automatically granted by submitting a request.

  • If you are requesting a deferred exam for an Arts course, request the deferral from the Chair of the appropriate department.
  • If you are requesting a deferred exam for Science, Engineering or PhysEd courses, present the request to the administrative assistant of the appropriate department. They will forward the deferral request to the Chair of the program.

If you need to request a deferral for a midterm exam or assignment, talk to your instructor.

GPA & Academic Standing

The academic standing of all students is evaluated at the end of each term. You must maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 to be considered in Good Academic Standing. Students whose GPA falls below 2.0 may either be placed on Academic Probation or be Required to Withdraw. For more information, refer to the Academic Standing policy (C2070) or talk to an advisor in Program Services.

Confirm Your Progress

Complete your planning sheets and an advisor can review them with you.  It is a good idea to have an advisor review your program planning and enrolment each year before you apply to the U of A.  Please contact the Office of Program Services to book an appointment.

Apply to the U of A's Faculty of Education

Applying

Apply online to the U of A's Faculty of Education before the application deadline. Typically, students apply in January for September admission.

Once you have applied to the U of A, you must contact the Office of the Registrar at the U of A for information regarding your application and registration.

Admission GPA for Students with 24 Transferable Credits

The minimum admission grade point average (AGPA) to the U of A is 2.0.  However, admission to the Faculty of Education is competitive; therefore, the actual AGPA may be higher.  For transfer applicants, your AGPA is calculated on a minimum of your most recent 24 credits. Since admission to the Faculty of Education is competitive, you are encouraged to have a back-up plan. For example, you could complete a BA at MacEwan and then apply to the After Degree program in Education. You can discuss your options with an advisor.

If you have completed fewer than 24 credits, please see the U of A's Admissions website for admission criteria.

If you have been required to withdraw from any post-secondary institution, you should contact the Faculty of Education at the U of A for admission information.

"How to Apply" Sessions

The Office of Program Services offers "How to Apply to the U of A" sessions in January.  We provide students with information on application, current admission requirements, and back-up plans. All B.Ed. transfer students should attend.  Watch your myMail account for sessions dates.

Transferring Courses

You may transfer a maximum of 60 credits to the U of A's Bachelor of Education program from other post-secondary institutions. To review how your MacEwan credits transfer to other post-secondary institutions in Alberta, please visit the online Alberta Transfer Guide.
