Statistics is the science of collecting and analyzing data. Probability theory, the study of uncertainty, provides the foundation for all statistical models.
Applied statistics is routinely used by researchers in such diverse fields as medicine, psychology, biology and economics.
Principles of probability theory and statistics are used to make decisions in the insurance industry, the financial world and in engineering.
The course list identifies approved courses that MacEwan may offer. Not all courses will be offered every year and some courses are restricted to particular programs. Contact an advisor in your program for information on course availability.

Planning sheets list the specific course requirements for each major and minor in a particular academic year. These requirements can change. The courses you must take to graduate will be determined by the requirements in effect in the year you declare your major or minor.
- Major in mathematical sciences (2012/2013)
- Minor in statistics (2012/2013)
If you declared prior to March 17, 2012, please visit the Bachelor of Science current student page for archived planning sheets. Use the planning sheets in conjunction with the B.Sc. Degree planner.
Statisticians plan, organize, analyze and interpret studies to provide usable information for a wide range of activities. For example, they may be involved in agricultural or health research, evaluating government programs, assessing environmental problems, improving manufacturing or business processes, or forecasting future economic conditions.
Corporations employ statisticians to work in market research, human resource forecasting, inventory control, cost analysis and process improvement. Statisticians also work in program planning, technological research, policy analysis, operational research, agricultural research, urban planning, wildlife management, energy and resource management, labour and economic forecasting, and social research.
