The Medical major provides you with a solid foundation in office and unit clerk procedures as well as in medical terminology, transcription, medical office procedures and patient chart management. In addition, students use current computer and software skills necessary for today’s business environment.
The course list, or program of study, outlines the program’s structure by term and year. It is the group of courses you must complete in order to graduate.
The Office Assistant program of study consists solely of core courses; students do not take electives or options. The core courses must be completed in the order presented on the tabbed pages; that is, term one courses are taken only in the first term, and so on.
2012 - 2013
One of the benefits of the Office Assistant program is its practicum component, which gives students hands-on experience in a real world setting. The practicum placement often helps you get your foot in the door and may even lead right to full-time work.
Students who have successfully completed their first and second terms and who are registered for both spring courses are eligible for a practicum placement.
Students taking the Medical major are required to take a practicum with a duration of three weeks. Due to hospital and collective agreement regulations, instructors are required to assist with placing students in hospital sites for the Medical major. Students are also required to have complete vaccinations and security checks.
Graduates are prepared for a variety of positions in diverse health care environments such as medical offices, insurance agencies, clinics, hospitals, and government agencies, as:
- Medical receptionists
- Medical office assistants
- Transcriptionists
- Unit clerks
