Audition

The pre-screening process determines which applicants will be invited to audition.

Step 1. Apply for admission to Grant MacEwan University, Bachelor of Music in Jazz and Contemporary Popular Music program.

Step 2. You must receive a reply acknowledgement letter from the Office of the Registrar to complete the pre-screening process.

Pre-screening Process

Submit a profile form* and a recorded DVD of two pieces you perform. Existing commercial CDs are not accepted at the pre-screening level.

DVD requirements: 

  • Each piece must be in contrasting styles (eg. jazz standard, pop, rock, country, blues etc.) and demonstrate your abilities, musicality, and versatility
  • Each piece must be less than three minutes long
  • One of the pieces can be an original work
  • The recordings must be unedited
  • We must be able to see and hear you clearly if you are performing with a band

Review

Our faculty reviews the profiles and DVDs. Only successful pre-screened applicants will be invited to audition for the Bachelor of Music program. 

Preparing for the Audition

Upon receipt of your invitation from MacEwan University Music to do a live audition, you will be expected to prepare and demonstrate your skills in the following components: 

Live and recorded audition requirements

  1. Repertoire (each piece may be no longer than four minutes; see listings below)
  2. Technical skills
  3. Sight-reading/sight-singing
  4. Theory and Aural Skills (Ear Training) exam. For details see: Theory and Aural Skills (Ear Training)
  5. Pitch-Matching entrance exams. For details see: Pitch-Matching

A committee will adjudicate the repertoire component of the audition. The technical component will be adjudicated by an individual faculty member in a one-on-one setting.

Recorded auditions
In-person auditions are highly recommended for all applicants, but a DVD recording will be accepted if you live outside of the province of Alberta. Recorded auditions must be of very good technical quality DVD and playable on North American systems.
