Digital Camera Requirements for Design Foundations

All students entering the Design Foundations Certificate are required to purchase a Digital SLR camera. This camera is not just for Foundations but will be used throughout all three years of shooting work, acquiring images, etc.

Students can decide which brand of camera to purchase. The minimum requirements are listed below. The program provides a variety of Nikon lenses which students can use in their diploma studies; as such, Nikon is the recommended platform.

Recommended minimum requirements for the DSLR: 14 megapixel sensor, 18-55 mm lens with UV filter, 2 8 GB SDHC Class 10 memory card (Class 10 is for video), USB card reader, and camera bag.

Approximate cost is $700 - 1000.

Recommended models: Nikon D3100, 14.2 megapixel sensor, 18-55 mm f3.5-5.6 OR Canon Rebel T2i or T3i, 18 megapixel sensor, 18-55 mm f3.5-5.6

Students Planning to go into Photography

If you are planning to enter the Photography major upon completion of Design Foundations, you may want to consider purchasing a pro-sumer or entry level professional camera. However, the above noted models will be sufficient although there will be some limitations to work around.

For a pro-sumer or entry level professional camera, we recommend the following minimum requirements:

Nikon D7000 (body)
16.2 megapixel sensor
24-85 mm f2.8-4 D IF with UV filter (lens)
2 8 GB SDHC Class 10 memory cards
USB reader
Extra battery
Camera bag

Approximate cost: $2000 - 2300.
