The Design Studies program at Grant MacEwan University is composed of a prerequisite one-year Design Foundations Certificate (or equivalent), leading to one of three two-year communication design diploma majors: Illustration, Digital Media, and Photography. All Design Studies students must successfully complete Foundations with a GPA of at least 2.0 in order to move into diploma studies. (Foundations equivalencies will be considered; applicants with an equivalent credential seeking direct enter to a design major must contact the program prior to the first portfolio submission date.)

The Design Foundations Certificate will introduce you to the history, theory and practice of design, providing you with a firm basis for further studies in one of the three majors offered in the Design Studies diploma program. 

Learn

The Centre for the Arts and Communications campus in west Edmonton, Alberta, is a creative, supportive community with state-of-the-art equipment.

Student learning and experience is enriched by faculty members who are passionate about teaching and practicing design, and are active professionals, experienced instructors and innovators in their fields who regularly engage in research and exhibit their creative work.

The Design Foundations Certificate offers both lecture and studio courses on:

• Design history and theory, design practices
• Drawing, typography, photography
• 2D and 3D design fundamentals, digital applications
• Problem-solving, and communication theory

Practice

Projects and studio courses let you apply what you've learned in class. You'll develop your portfolio with skills in:

• Drawing and photography
• Concept development and creative problem solving
• Design methods and digital layout

Succeed

You must complete the Design Foundations Certificate, (or equivalent) before building on this foundation by continuing your studies in one of MacEwan University's Design Studies diploma majors: Digital Media, Illustration, or Photography. Students with prior post-secondary study in design fundamentals may be eligible for advanced standing.
