Sharon Bookhalter
RN, BScN, M.Ed.
Appointed Dean, Faculty of Health and Community Studies on July 1, 2005, Sharon is responsible for the effective leadership of over 20 programs within the Faculty of Health and Community Studies. She has overall responsibility for aligning health and community studies programs with the strategic directions of the university, faculty and staff and recruitment, fostering scholarly activity, curriculum development, enrolment management, student success strategies, and financial operations and facilities management as it relates to the faculty.
Sharon began her tenure at Grant MacEwan University in 2000 as academic coordinator for the Health Education Link Project (HELP) sponsored by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and in 2002 was appointed associated dean of the Faculty of Health and Community Studies. Prior to coming to MacEwan, Sharon was a faculty member at the University of Alberta where she served in the capacity of lecturer, clinical instructor and academic advisor within the Faculty of Nursing. Her clinical practice experience includes caring for critically ill patients in Intensive Care (University of British Columbia, Health Sciences Centre) and Coronary Care (Edmonton General Hospital). Sharon retains active membership with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA), the Canadian Nurses Association, the National League for Nursing, the International Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning, and the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT). She was awarded an Exemplary Leader award by the Chair Academy (Denver, 2008); the HELP Project she coordinated was the recipient of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CBIE) award for outstanding program in international education (2002).
Within MacEwan, Sharon serves on Academic Governance Council (AGC), the Academic Leadership Team (ALT), Program Advisory Councils and chairs a number of Faculty Health and Community Studies committees. Externally, Sharon serves on the steering committee of the Interdisciplinary Health Education Project (IHEP), a partnership with Alberta Health Services, University of Alberta, NAIT and Norquest focused on the development, integration and research of simulated interdisciplinary learning in health education programs. Sharon is committed to facilitating student learning through innovation and excellence in teaching, curricula, and technology integration to prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, and attributes for successful careers and lifelong learning. She is also committed to maintaining strong connections with, and being responsive to, communities of practice, and to engaging faculty in scholarly activity to inform and enrich teaching, professional practice, and knowledge in the disciplines represented.
