Practical experience is integrated into program courses through completion of assignments. To complete practical assignments in many program courses, students are given a choice between:
- working in partnership with a local qualified and MacEwan-approved professional to complete learning activities and assignments; or
- attending a lab at MacEwan to work with other students on the learning activities and assignments, with support from the instructor.
There are two courses within the Hearing Aid Practitioner program with back-to-back mandatory labs on campus at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The courses are scheduled in the winter term of the second year of the program, so the minimum on-site requirement for students in the Hearing Aid Practitioner program is to be on campus for one visit only, for a period of approximately 10 days.
Practice Course
A practice course is completed at the end of the first year of the program, during which students complete seminar activities online, practice and reflect upon all first-year practical skills, and submit video assignments for grading. The course can be completed in a lab with the instructor and other students at MacEwan in Edmonton, or under the supervision of a qualified and MacEwan-approved professional in a local hearing aid dispensing clinic.
Field Placement Course
Students complete a field placement course at the end of the second year of the program. In the field placement course students participate in online seminar activities with the instructor and other students, and spend 180 hours working in a hearing aid dispensing clinic under the direct supervision of a MacEwan-approved professional, gaining experience as an entry-level hearing aid practitioner.
