University differs from high school in many ways. You are ultimately responsible for yourself, your studies, your schedule, paying fees, meeting graduation requirements, etc. For example,
- you have formal rights and responsibilities
- your grades on your transcript are a permanent record
- you must maintain acceptable academic standing in order to stay at Grant MacEwan University.
Successful students
- engage with the university community
- do more than just attend class
- take responsibility
- have their finances figured out
- have a career or educational goal
- ask for help when needed.
Advisors expections of you
Advisors at MacEwan are here to help you get the information you need so you can take the correct steps and be successful; however, you need to be an active participant in your learning. We expect you to:
- communicate with us directly about your application, grades, etc. You can give someone else written permission to do so; however, it is in your best interest to get information for yourself
- check your MyMail account – we communicate with you mainly through this email account
- track the status of your MacEwan application frequently – don’t wait until the week before the start of term to find out why you are not yet accepted
- take ownership of your education
- fill in your own application forms – to MacEwan and for funding
- be responsible for your decisions and actions
- actively participate by listening and asking for clarification when necessary
- be prepared for advising sessions by bringing questions, concerns, ideas, etc.
- provide all relevant information about yourself with respect to your educational goal
- read information provided by advisors and the university and follow through with recommended tasks
- understand that an advisor has limitations and may need to refer you to a more suitable contact
- communicate in a respectful manner (this includes turning off your cell phone during appointments).
