Grant MacEwan University will “remit” your tuition and fees directly from your loan certificate when we confirm your enrolment. This means that, when we sign your loan, we will ask that your tuition be sent directly to us.
We sign your loan in one of the following ways:
Electronically
If you are registered in a full-time course load for all of your semesters by the beginning of August (for studies in fall and winter terms) or the middle of November (for studies in winter term), MacEwan will confirm your enrolment with Alberta Students Finance. We will ask that your fall (and sometimes winter) tuition be sent to us directly. You will subsequently receive “confirmed” loan certificates in the mail. You can then cash (process) your loans. MacEwan considers your tuition paid on the day we sign your loans, even though we won’t receive the money for a few weeks after you process your loans.
In person
If you are not registered in a full-time course load in the above timelines, you will be sent “unconfirmed” loan documents. You will need to bring them to a Student Resource Centre Student Advisor to be signed. Before an advisor can sign your certificate(s), you will need to first register in a full-time course load for your entire period of studies.
Don’t pay twice!
Once we sign your loans, we consider your tuition paid; however, your Student Centre on myStudentSystem will show that you owe your fees until MacEwan actually receives your loan money. To see if you loan has been signed and how much will be set to MacEwan, go to:
>> myStudentSystem
>> Self Service
>> Student Centre
> Scroll down to "Finances"
> Link into "View My Loans"
If you are on loan funding and are unsure whether or not your tuition is paid, contact a Student Advisor in the Student Resource Centre.
Cash your loans within 30 days of them being signed
You must cash your loans within 30 days of them being signed. If your student loan money does not appear on your MacEwan account by mid-October (fall term) or mid-February (winter term), you may be withdrawn from your courses and charged late fees. If 30 days has passed since your loans have been signed, you will need to have them resigned by a Student Advisor in the Student Resource Centre.
If you don’t have enough loan money for your tuition
You must pay the difference to cover your tuition. Not sure? Contact a Student Advisor in the Student Resource Centre.
If you’ve cashed an Alberta Student Loan (ASL) before
Your ASL certificate will likely be virtual, i.e., you won’t see it. Alberta Students Finance will email you when your ASL is issued.
