Advocacy & Appeals

The Students’ Association strives to provide the strongest possible voice for all students enrolled at MacEwan University.

Advocacy

Your Students’ Association speaks on behalf of all students on several committees, including MacEwan University’s Board of Governors and the Academic Governance Committee. We represent you – as a student – at the local, provincial and federal levels by attending conferences and meetings, and lobbying on MacEwan students’ behalf. Your SA also researches, negotiates, and secures agreements and contracts with other organizations to provide services that universally benefit MacEwan students, with U-Pass and the Health and Dental Plan being the largest, and the 24 Hour Study Space being the most recent. If you feel there is something the SA needs to address or lobby for, please tell us! Fill out a SpeakUp! form on the main SA webpage, or make an appointment with a Student Executive or Students’ Councilor.

Appeals

While being a student comes with responsibilities, as a student you also have rights. One of these rights is to appeal certain academic decisions. There are many circumstances where you might want to file an academic appeal. For example, maybe you withdrew from a course and it was not recorded accurately. Or maybe you were mistakenly placed on academic probation. Perhaps your grades were not accurately recorded on your transcript. Or you may wish to dispute a grade you feel was unfair. Whatever the reason, if you think you may want to file an academic appeal, you must follow the steps below:

  1. Talk directly to your instructor. A simple conversation can often resolve mistakes or misunderstandings. Take accurate notes of what you talk about with your instructor.
  2. If your instructor does not want to talk or the matter cannot be satisfactorily resolved, visit your campus’ Students’ Association office immediately to file an appeal. DO NOT DELAY. There are strict time limits on all appeals. If you miss a deadline, you will not be eligible for an appeal.
  3. Not all decisions can be appealed. Learning about what you can and cannot appeal will save you time, and help you understand your rights. Listed below are policies that deal with appeals:

Academic Integrity (C1000)
Academic Standing (C2070)
Attendance
Grading
Final Assessments
Student Discipline
Student Rights and Responsibilities
Harassment
Study Abroad
Ethical Review of Research with Human Participants
Workplace Learning

Remember, you are not alone. You have an elected student executive who knows and understands how to navigate the University’s appeals process concerning the policies listed above. David Drohan, Vice President, Academic currently spearheads academic appeals. David's email is: savpacademic@macewan.ca  If you have a concern around these policies, you can email or make an appointment with David.  Additionally, the Student Resource Centre (SRC) has councilors that can advise you on the policies mentioned above.
