The English Language Summer Session runs for three, four or five weeks and will be offered in July/August 2010. It includes a combination of morning English classes, afternoon workshops (music, newsletter, culture, etc.) and a number of field trips and activities in and around Edmonton. Explore is the five week component only. For more information on this program visit www.jexplore.ca . Field trips include such places as Fort Edmonton Park, the Telus World of Science, and the Alberta Legislature. Weekend trips include a visit to the Lamont Rodeo, West Edmonton Mall, Elk Island Park and more. Special group classes can be arranged for students 12 to 17 years of age.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE SUMMER SESSION FOR ADULTS (18 years of age & over) GENERAL PROGRAM INFORMATION
Summer 2010 Dates July 5 – August 6 July 5 – July 30 July 5 – July 23 ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS • Applicants must be 18 years old on or before the first day of the course. • Applicants must have permanent resident status, valid visitor’s visa and/or student authorization. • Applicants must have medical insurance.
PROGRAM GOALS The English Language Summer Session is a program especially developed for students living outside Alberta, Canada. This program consists of core morning classes, afternoon workshops and a number of compulsory excursions in and around Edmonton. It aims to:
• develop English language proficiency of students with emphasis on a communicative approach to language learning,
• introduce students to the cultural life of Edmonton and Western Canada, and
• provide students with opportunities to participate in a number of summer events in and around Edmonton.
CORE CLASSES The core course focuses primarily on oral communication in a variety of situations. Reading and writing will be introduced as a follow-up or supplement to the oral activities. Some homework will also be assigned. Students are divided into at least three classes to accommodate differences in English speaking ability. No class will have more than 18 students.
The classes are 3.5 hours long, five mornings a week (Monday to Friday), giving a total of 17.5 hours of formal instruction each week.
EXCURSIONS Students will visit places of interest in Edmonton. They will be accompanied by the instructors and/or monitors and may be asked by their instructors to complete a related assignment. Any entrance fees will be covered by the program. Participation in these visits is mandatory.
WORKSHOPS Five afternoons a week for 2 hours, students will attend compulsory workshops led by monitors. Workshops include such activities as drama, music, and newsletter production. These workshops allow students the opportunity to practise English in different contexts.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION All English Language Summer Session courses are non-credit in that these courses are not directly transferable to any college or university certificate, diploma or degree program. A certificate of successful completion is issued to those who successfully complete the course. Absence from class is cause for denial of a certificate.
Evaluation/tests will be a regular part of the classes. A letter grade will be assigned for the core course.
Upon request, the program will administer, free of charge, the placement testing for the full time ESL program. This program ranges from high-beginner to academic preparation.
ORGANIZED ACTIVITIES Evening and weekend activities will also be arranged. Some of these will be optional and others will be mandatory. Students will pay their own fee, if applicable, for optional activities. Cost of all mandatory events will be covered by the program.
RULES We hope you will spend an enjoyable and rewarding five weeks with us. The observance of the following rules will make your visit a profitable one.
1. Students who receive a government bursary MUST SPEAK ENGLISH AT ALL TIMES. Only three warnings will be issued. For those receiving a government bursary, the fourth violation will result in cancellation of the bursary. We ask that non-bursary and international students follow the “English Only” rule while in class and with other students.
2. Attendance at classes, workshops and mandatory activities is compulsory. Three lates will be recorded as an absence.
3. Students with unsatisfactory attendance or those behaving in an unacceptable manner will be expelled from the program after ONE WARNING.
4. Bursary students are required to remain in MacEwan Residence for the duration of the program. Violation of this rule will result in cancellation of the bursary. Overnight absences are permitted only for emergencies and only with prior permission from the Coordinator.
5. A non-refundable program fee of $150.00 is required to establish a bona fide acceptance of the bursary or a position in the program. If the student decides not to attend, this fee will not be refunded.
INFORMATION FOR THE STUDENT 1. ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE. Placement tests for students will be held on July 5 in the morning. For this reason, all the students should arrive in Edmonton on July 4 at the latest.
Travel from/to the Edmonton International Airport by taxi is approximately $50 one way.
International 3-Week Program: Final exams are held on the morning of July 23 and certificates will be handed out in the afternoon or mailed.
4-Week Program: Final exams are held on the morning of July 30 and certificates will be handed out in the afternoon or mailed.
5-Week Program: Final exams are held on the morning of August 5 and certificates will be handed out at the graduation the following evening. Students should therefore plan to leave no sooner than August 7.
2. TRAVEL. International and non-bursary students are encouraged to attend mandatory weekend activities and do their travelling at the end of the program or before it starts. The last activity is on the evening of August 6. Students are also required to be present for final testing on the appropriate morning (see above).
3. PERSONAL EXPENSES. Students will need extra spending money. Some activities may be planned which are optional, in which case the program does not pay for the outings. Students spend an average of $750.00 for the duration of the program. The bursary recipients are responsible for expenses related to pre-existing medical conditions and should have insurance coverage before participating in the program.
4. TRANSPORTATION. Students will be required to purchase their own transit fares (monthly student pass is approximately $55.00).
5. International students must have medical insurance.
6. MEALS: Bursary students will be provided with a grocery allowance.
7. ACCOMMODATION: MacEwan Residence.
8. Dress is casual although students may wish to bring something a little “dressier” for the graduation dinner.
9. Students are encouraged to bring an English dictionary as well as sports equipment/clothing and musical instruments.
Use of the Sport and Wellness Centre on the College campus is permitted in accordance with the rules set for Grant MacEwan College students. A special fee entitles you to use the facilities for the five week duration of the program. This fee allows you to use the aquatic area, whirlpool, locker rooms, steam rooms, gymnasium, racquetball/squash courts, and the weight room.
