Spanish
Why learn Spanish?
Today approximately 500 million people across four continents speak Spanish, and it is the mother tongue of close to 350 million people in more than twenty-one countries (mostly in the Americas and Spain, but also in parts of Africa and the Philippines). Canada’s main trading partner, the United States, alone has 35.5 million Spanish speakers.
On a local level, according to Alberta Economic Development, one out of every three jobs in our province can be traced to the export of goods and services. Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, and Cuba rank within the top twenty-five countries for Alberta exports. It is not hard to see how knowing Spanish can maximize your employment opportunities.
Of course, it is not all about work and money. Learning Spanish will also open doors to a rich world of culture. Imagine having access to the original works of Cervantes, Sor Juana de la Cruz, García Márquez, and Neruda. Imagine enjoying the art of Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, or Diego Rivera, and having an understanding of the cultural setting in which it was created. Picture yourself traveling in Latin America or Spain and actually being able to communicate with the locals.
Whatever your reasons, expand your horizons… learn Spanish!
