Canadian Authors’ Series For the past 26 years, MacEwan has hosted an annual series of readings by Canadian authors. In the early years, Michael Ondaatje and Margaret Atwood read here. Over the years, most of the major Canadian authors and many of the lesser-known ones have read at MacEwan. In recent years, famous readers have been Douglas Coupland, Rohinton Mistry, Carol Shields, Alistair MacLeod, Thomas King, David Suzuki, John Ralston Saul and others. The series has tripled in size, from about four readings per year to about twelve, due to partnerships with local bookstores and broadening of government funding to include both federal and provincial funding agencies - the Canada Council and the Alberta Foundation For the Arts. The readings, administered by a series of English instructors, have always been provided free of charge to the college community and the public. Like all such series presented by educational institutions across the country, our authors' series increases awareness of Canadian literature and culture.
