The emerging shift to community-based programming as a result of health care restructuring is dramatically affecting mental health care systems. There is a need to find solutions to mental health issues at the community level. With issues of grief and loss, violence and abuse, addictions and dual diagnosis, chronic depression and suicide, there is a strong demand for broad-based professionals who are familiar with mental health issues and have the skill to fill the gaps between existing services. Current mental health and social services often come from a "western" medical approach that does not reflect the needs of Aboriginal peoples. Holistic and cultural approaches to mental health recognize the body, mind, emotion and spirit are interconnected. The history of Aboriginal peoples is unique as to how structures have been imposed on a culture that had traditionally addressed issues from a holistic perspective. The disruption of this lifestyle has strongly impacted the mental health of Aboriginal peoples. MacEwan's Mental Health diploma program is the opportunity you've been waiting for. This isn't your average lecture and exam program; with a dynamic approach to issues of health, violence, addictions, suicide, and community. The Mental Health program features culturally relevant instruction through sharing circles, an on-campus Elder's office, and guest speakers from both the aboriginal community and front-line mental health and community services. Employment opportunities across the province go unfilled because of a lack of well-educated mental health workers. Your diploma gives you the skills, experience, and understanding to be able to make a dramatic difference to the health and wellness of all people.
