New chair to lead Board of Governors

John Day, QC, has been named the chair of the university's Board of Governors. He recently retired from Fraser Milner Casgrain, where he was a senior lawyer and partner, specializing in the field of commercial real estate.

"John brings extensive leadership and governance experience from his professional, community and volunteer affiliations," said Dr. Paul Byrne, MacEwan's president and CEO. "He offers significant strategic and financial planning expertise and his experience in the field of commercial real estate will be invaluable as MacEwan works toward a Single Sustainable Campus in downtown Edmonton."

As a community leader and a parent of three grown children, two of whom attended MacEwan, John is very familiar with the university and its contribution to the community and economy.

John is an alumnus of the University of Alberta and was appointed Queen's Council in 1990. A member of the Edmonton Bar Association and the Law Society of Alberta, he also served as Vice Chairman of the Law Office Economics Section of the Canadian Bar Association. John's other community involvement includes:

  • Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, Board Member
  • Edmonton Economic Development Authority, Board Member
  • Edmonton Air Services, Board Member
  • University of Alberta, Volunteer alumnus
  • Marmot Basin, Chairman of the Board
  • Mountain Park Lodges, Chairman of the Board

John replaces outgoing chair, Eric Young QC, Witten Law, who completed two three-year terms and an additional six months. During Eric's tenure, MacEwan implemented six undergraduate degree programs, built a student residence and the Robbins Health Learning Centre, and was named a university by the Government of Alberta in September 2009.
