Grant MacEwan University
Program Details

The course of study comprises an initial core year (two terms) of individual instrumental or vocal lessons, participation in small and large groups (including the jazz choir, big band, guitar and showcase bands, and percussion ensemble), improvisation, ear training, studies in musical literature and style, theory, and related performance experiences.

After successful completion of the core year, students may apply to major during the second year in writing, performance, or recording arts, or pursue a more comprehensive program of studies. Courses offered in these majors include those related specifically to the chosen discipline as well as professionalism, music technology, and, again, relevant performance opportunities.

Instruction is offered for a number of instruments:
  • Guitar
  • Piano
  • Drum set
  • Bass (electric and acoustic)
  • Winds
  • Voice

Technology Integration for Creative Learning (TICL)

The use of Technology in the Music Industry has grown tremendously over recent years, and the Music Program at MacEwan is committed to providing the training and resources necessary for students to succeed professionally.

Starting in Fall 2009 at MacEwan's Centre for the Arts and Communications, second year students enrolled in Music Technology I, the Recording Arts Major, or Composition Major will be required to use an Apple Macintosh laptop computer and specialized software. The University has worked very closely with Apple and various software manufacturers to provide students with the tools they need at pricing that is even far below typical academic discounts.

Students entering their first year of studies may also want to consider buying into this laptop program to have these tools available to them for the duration of their studies at MacEwan, regardless of their selected Major.

The Apple MacBook Pro is required because much of the curriculum that is taught at MacEwan is exclusively for the Macintosh, and students entering the professional world will most likely encounter much of the software that they used during their studies. All of the recommended hardware and software is currently available through the MacEwan Bookstores.  A detailed communication piece is sent out to all registered second year students, and by request to interested first year students.

Please contact Marcel Hamel, Coordinator of Music Technology at hamelm@macewan.ca for further information.

Integrated Program of Study

Students may also elect to take a combined Music and Arts and Cultural Management integrated program of study.
