Spring is typically a quieter season on campus, but with National Indigenous Peoples Day, the university’s spring convocation ceremonies and Pride Month coming up, there are lots of opportunities to connect, celebrate and reflect.

On May 25, kihêw waciston is kicking off a series of events leading up to National Indigenous Peoples Day with a music showcase in Allard Hall featuring artists from across Canada and the U.S – including 2022 Juno Award winner Fawn Wood, Spur Pourier, Gunner Jules, Nataani Means, Tammy Lamouche and more. (ICYMI, check out these other Juno Award winners with MacEwan connections.)

Grab some comfortable shoes and head outside on June 2 for a walk with Knowledge Keeper Carla Badger, where she will share teachings about Indigenous ways of knowing and being and some of the histories of these lands. Then, on June 7, join Knowledge Keeper Cynthia Jim and Magen Alexis from kihêw waciston to learn and ask questions about the role cultural protocols and gifting play in beginning relationships with Elders and Knowledge Keepers.

kihêw waciston’s first Maker Market on June 10 is the perfect place to support Indigenous artists and creators (and pick up some gifts to keep on hand for the coming academic year). On June 17, pull up a chair, tuck into some bannock and popcorn, and take in the stunning cinematic achievement that is SG̲aawaay Ḵ’uuna (Edge of the Knife) – the first feature film entirely in the Haida language.

National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21 is also the first day of MacEwan’s spring convocation ceremonies. Whether you’re attending in person or viewing the live stream, you’ll see several Indigenous elements woven into the event.

Celebrating our newest grads, recipients of the university’s honorary doctorates, and several of our distinguished alumni will continue throughout convocation ceremonies on June 21, 22 and 23.

Not quite ready to walk the stage for convocation yet? Look to the library for tips on how to hone your research skills with Research Essentials Workshops on May 31, June 3 (online), June 6 and June 9

And while you’re considering the rest of your university career, why not look at doing some of your learning a bit further afield? Check out one of the Virtual Education Abroad Information Sessions on May 27 and June 24.

Don’t forget Pride Month! The Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) will host a casual Pride Picnic on June 8 at noon (keep an eye on MacEwan.ca/Events for details so you can pack a lunch, show your pride and share in community). You can also join CSGD at community events throughout the month of June – make sure to wear your MacEwan gear (and if your pets get into the Pride spirit, make sure to tag their pics with #PetsOfPrideYEG to win prizes from CSGD)!
