Certification

Some people cannot get enough of the water. They are passionate about swimming and want to take their training to a higher level or pursue a career as a lifeguard or swim instructor.

At MacEwan, you can participate in a number of certification programs that focus on advanced swimming skills, aquatics leadership, lifeguarding and lifesaving, and first aid. Successful completion of leadership programs requires attendance of all classes.

Fall Certification Schedule at a Glance

Bronze Star

Work on swimming proficiency, lifesaving skills and personal fitness. Swimmers refine their stroke mechanics, acquire self-rescue skills, and apply fitness principles in training workouts. Bronze Star is excellent preparation for Bronze Medallion and provides a fun introduction to lifesaving sport.
Prerequisite: Must pass the Lifesaving Society Swim Test: Safe entry into shallow water, 25m swim without stopping or resting, followed by treading water for 30 seconds.

Bronze Medallion

This course will help develop an understanding of the water rescue elements: judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Bronze Medallion also teaches candadates CPR-C and AED. Bronze Medallion is a pre-requisite for assistant lifeguard training in Bronze Cross. Prerequisites: 13 or Bronze Star

Bronze Cross with Aquatic Emergency Care and O2 Administration

Begin the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepare for responsibilities as an assistant lifeguard. Bronze Cross also includes Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) which is equivalent to Standard First Aid and includes skills specific to emergencies in an aquatic setting. Oxygen Administration (O2) provides the knowledge and techniques for the use of oxygen as a supplement in an emergency care situation.
Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion

First Aid Instructor / Examiner

First Aid Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Lifesaving Society CPR, Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Aquatic Emergency Care, CPR-HCP, and Oxygen (O2) Administration programs.
Prerequisites: Lifesaving Instructor and current Lifesaving Standard First Aid or Government of Alberta workplace approved Standard First Aid.

National Lifeguard

The National Lifeguard (NL) program develops basic lifeguarding skills, principles and decision-making processes to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies.
Prerequisites: Ages 16 +, and Bronze Cross (need not be current), and current Government of Albert workplace approved standard first aid OR Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC).

National Lifeguard / Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) / Oxygen Administration (O2) - Recertification

Prerequisites: National Lifeguard (need not be current) and Government of Alberta OH & S Approved Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care (must be current). Must provide proof of certifications.

National Lifeguard Instructor

National Lifeguard Instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the National Lifeguard Pool, waterpark, waterfront and surf programs. Prerequisites: Current National Lifeguard (any option), Lifesaving Instructor (need not be current), National Lifeguard (any option) must be held for a minimum of two (2) years. Experience teaching Lifesaving Society certification programs is recommended.

Standard First Aid (SFA) or Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) / Oxygen Administration Original

Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. It is a government of Alberta workplace approved course.

Swim and Lifesaving Instructor

Swim and Lifesaving instructors are responsible for teaching and evaluating candidates participating in the Swim for Life, Canadian Swim Patrol, Bronze Medals, Distinction, Boat Rescue and Lifesaving Society CPR programs.
Prerequisites: Ages 16 + and Bronze Cross or higher (need not be current).

Cancellation policies

No refunds will be issued for withdrawals after the regular registration deadline.

Prior to the regular registration deadline, you may withdraw from any program for a full refund.

Late registrations may be accepted, pending available space. Speak to a Welcome Desk representative or email welcomedesk@macewan.ca for assistance.

Patrons may transfer from one program to another before the registration deadline, granted space is available in the requested program, with the consent of the programmer. Price differences are the responsibility of the patron.
