The Office of General Counsel at MacEwan University is growing and currently has an opportunity for Legal Counsel to join its team. The Office of General Counsel provides advice and direction to the university with respect to contracts, liability, risk, compliance, administrative and regulatory matters, and coordinates the development, monitoring and approval of all institutional policies.
Reporting to the General Counsel and Vice President, Governance, Diversity and Inclusion, Legal Counsel will be responsible for providing legal advisory services affecting the university’s operations; managing and providing input on projects, committees, administrative and regulatory matters, including policy review and development, and legislative compliance; and providing education to faculty and staff on various legal, risk and compliance issues.
The successful candidate must be a self-starter who works independently with minimal supervision, with the ability to analyze and provide clear and concise advice on a wide range of legal, risk, compliance, and policy matters. The incumbent must be able to lead projects, negotiate and apply principles of conflict resolution; develop and implement legal strategies and solutions; and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to balance business requirements against risk.
The candidate must have a law degree from an accredited law school, membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta and a minimum of two years of experience as a general practicing lawyer with an emphasis on solicitor's work. The successful candidate will have high ethical standards and strong leadership attributes, and experience in employment law (including labour relations), legislative interpretation, and contract drafting, review and negotiation. Knowledge of applicable laws impacting the university’s policies and operations is essential and experience in a government or quasi-government environment within the post-secondary sector would be beneficial.
