The Department of Child and Youth Care offers an undergraduate degree, with a diploma exit option available at the end of year two. The diploma equips graduates with the foundational knowledge and skills for professional practice with children, youth, and their families who may be experiencing multiple, complex challenges in their community. Years three and four prepare students for advanced practice in intensive programs with children, youth and families through courses on abuse and neglect, substance abuse, law and social services, and advanced methodology in individual, group and family practice. The degree level education prepares students for more complex positions and graduate programs in child and youth care.
The program emphasizes the integration of theory with practice and includes extensive field placement hours.
The Department of Child and Youth Care, Faculty of Health and Community Studies invites applications for two full-time, tenure-track appointments commencing July 1, 2019. The successful candidates are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching in a range of innovative and creative classroom and online instructional strategies that are consistent with the core philosophical principles of child and youth care education. Areas of expertise that are of interest to the Department include mental health, addictions, family support, communication and counseling skills, abuse and neglect, child and youth care methods, and human development. Field placement supervision will be an expectation of this position, so experience in this area would be an asset.
The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in research, scholarship, and service activities. Preferred candidates will hold a PhD in Child and Youth Care. Master level credentials or educational credentials in a related discipline may be considered. Candidates must also have practice experience in Child and Youth Care and have certification with the Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta (or eligibility for certification). The successful candidates will be expected to demonstrate a passion for teaching undergraduate students and have a willingness to engage in service to the Department, Faculty, and University. Scholarly activity, including experience mentoring students in research and scholarly writing skills is an asset.
