BI Developer (Tech IV)

We are seeking an experienced BI Developer for our MacEwan University ITS business Intelligence department.

The BI Developer is accountable for analysis, design and development of the University’s business intelligence and data warehousing solutions. This position is the primary role responsible for administration and provision of application development and support services for BI technology used to connect to, transform and visualize data. Acts as IT liaison for internal and external contacts related to the solutions within the BI architecture stack (i. e. Microsoft Power BI, Erwin, IBM InfoSphere).

Position Requirements

  • Degree in Computer Science, information technology or related discipline, or diploma in related discipline combined with relevant on-the-job experience.

  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience with BI and DW technologies.

  • Experience in design and development of data marts, data warehouses and consolidated data repositories.

  • Experience with Microsoft Power BI (Power BI Services, Power BI Desktop, Power BI Pro, Power BI Premium) including the Data Analysis Expression (DAX) function library.

  • Experience in dashboard and KPI development.

  • Previous experience with ETL development, preferably with DataStage.

  • Work experience with DW architecture and data modeling; experience with Erwin data modeler preferred.

  • A background of working in a large post secondary institution with demonstrated knowledge of standard business processes is an asset.


  • Customer-centric, collaborative mind set

  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and the ability to interact professionally with a broad group of technical and business subject matter experts

  • Proficiency in analytic and problem-solving skills, detail-oriented mind set and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

  • High level of competency with data manipulation and interrogation using SQL

  • Knowledge of data warehouse, data mart and database technologies, standards, and methodologies

  • Good understanding of database and data warehouse design theory (logical and physical)

  • Expertise with BI and analytical UX development using Microsoft BI toolset.

  • Strong understanding of Power BI application security layer models

  • Strong knowledge of Data Analysis Expression (DAX) query language

  • Knowledge of IaaS, PaaS or SaaS Cloud services

  • Good understanding of ETL design theory

  • Ability to develop and maintain Extract, Transform and Loading (ETL) processes. Experience with DataStage an asset.

  • Microsoft Power BI certification(s) an asset.

Equivalents and work experience will be considered.
