Security Analyst

The Information Security and Compliance Office is looking for an individual experienced in information security to take on the role of Senior Security Analyst. The Analyst will be responsible for designing and implementing MacEwan's security applications, controls and procedures and will report directly to the Senior Information Security and Compliance Officer.

Key tasks will include:

  • Developing MacEwan's security monitoring platforms to provide accurate dashboards and automated alerts 

  • Work with other IT staff to improve MacEwan's security posture through industry best practices 

  • Advise in the security design and review of new information technology solutions 

  • Conduct investigations and handle security incident response 

  • Manage the IT asset vulnerability management program at MacEwan. 

  • Aid the Senior Information Security and Compliance Officer in developing and extending 

  • MacEwan's Information Management Policies and Control Framework 

  • Liaise and co-operate with security professionals from other post-secondary institutions.

The successful candidate should have a strong willingness to develop security solutions leveraging open source solutions and emerging DevOps tooling where possible. They will have a deep technical skill set in information security, experience with cyber security frameworks, risk identification and management, vulnerability management, policy development, and strong oral and written communication skills.


To be successful, the candidate will need a University degree in Computing Science or related fields plus 10 years of experience in IT with at least 4 years focused on information security. Alternatively, any University degree combined with the relevant experience may be considered. The position requires an academic level of thinking and problem solving. Well-developed communication skills are necessary to interact with other IT staff, business areas, vendors and other third parties.

Knowledge of information security standards (i.e. ISO 17799/27002, NIST Cyber Security Framework, OWASP etc), rules and regulations related to information security confidentiality (i.e. FOIP), and information security principles for risk identification and analysis are essential. Experience in system and security policy design would be considered an asset. The candidate should also have a broad understanding of virtualization, Linux and Windows operating systems, campus and datacenter networks, firewalls and load balancers. An understanding of software development methodologies and how they pertain to creating secure robust applications will be considered an asset as well.
