Writing and Learning Services – MacEwan Library

Opportunity

Writing and Learning Services is seeking MacEwan University students to fill the role of Student Peer Tutor for the 2021/22 academic year. Student Peer Tutors provide tutoring to MacEwan University students in the university’s Writing Centre to help students strengthen their writing skills, improve their understanding of academic integrity in written assignments, and develop their general study strategies. The Student Peer Tutors also welcome visitors to the Writing Centre and provide them with information about the peer tutoring program, and they assist Writing and Learning Services staff in promoting the Writing Centre’s peer tutoring program.

Skills

The successful applicant must be a current MacEwan University student who is passionate about and skilled in academic writing and engaging with other students. Tutors must carry a strong overall GPA (3.3 or higher) and demonstrate excellence in writing-intensive courses, securing the recommendation of at least two faculty members. They will need to have excellent organizational skills, strong verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to adapt and be flexible. They must be positive and encouraging, always seeking to create a welcoming space for students to discuss writing and to build confidence to push through academic challenges. The ability to work well with programs such as Blackboard, MS Word, Google Docs, and Google Forms is essential. Applicants should be enrolled in their 3rd or 4th year of a degree program that emphasizes academic writing skills and that provides plenty of academic writing experience, though students in another year of study or who are in a diploma program will also be considered if they have previously completed a degree and are working on a new credential. Hours will be flexible around student and Writing Centre schedules. This is a casual position of up to 12 hours per week from September 8, 2021 to April 5, 2022 (no hours scheduled during school breaks, exam periods, or holidays). Additionally, there will be mandatory, paid training scheduled to take place within the last two weeks of August, 2021.
