Opportunity

The Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Arts and Science invites applications for two full-time tenure-track appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2022, subject to final budgetary approval.

The Department of Sociology at MacEwan offers a General Sociology degree and specializations in Criminology, and in Family, Youth, and Diversity.

Candidates for the first position will have expertise in Criminology, Socio-legal Studies, or Criminal Justice and will complement and enhance existing strengths in the Department’s Criminology curriculum. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Sociology, Criminology, Socio-legal Studies, Criminal Justice, or related fields and will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching bolstered by an ongoing research program.

Candidates for the second position will have expertise in Sociology, Gender Studies, or Cultural Studies and will complement and enhance existing strengths in the Department’s Family, Youth, and Diversity curriculum. The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D. in Sociology or related fields and will demonstrate a primary commitment to undergraduate teaching bolstered by an ongoing research program.

In either position, you will demonstrate excellence, or clear promise of excellence, in teaching both junior and senior undergraduate level courses. If successful, you will teach the equivalent of six courses per year and actively participate in curriculum development. Your ability to teach beyond your specialization, be it statistics, research methods, or sociological theory, is an asset. You will develop a strong research program involving undergraduate students and build a broad external research network and seek to attract external funding.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, teaching dossier (including recent teaching evaluations), statement of research interests, a sample of scholarly work, academic transcripts, along with the names and contact information of three professional referees. The Department Chair will only ask those candidates who have been medium- or shortlisted to provide three (3) letters of reference, to be sent directly from referees.
