New Alumni Advisory Council represents MacEwan University's 75,000 graduates

Since its first classes in 1971, MacEwan University has graduated over 75,000 students. Those alumni have gone on to become passionate community members, industry leaders and game changers in cities and sectors across Alberta, Canada and the world.
Now those alumni will have a stronger voice and greater input into university activities.
In the fall of 2018 amendments made to the Post-Secondary Learning Act laid the groundwork for the development of an Alumni Advisory Council, which would serve as the representative body for the university’s alumni association (the official group to which all MacEwan graduates belong). The advisory council’s role would be to offer guidance on alumni engagement activities and build mutually beneficial relationships between alumni and the university.
After a thorough application process, 12 inaugural members of the Alumni Advisory Council were named this year, officially bringing the council into being. “We were looking for a good cross-section of grads representing different programs, graduating years and life experiences,” says Michelle Stevenson, director, Alumni and Community Engagement.
In addition to representing alumni from across programs and years, each member of the council will also be assigned to a specific area or segment within the university – including the academic faculties and schools, athletics and university employees who are also alumni – in order to foster engagement between alumni and all areas of the university community.
“MacEwan was a transformational experience for me,” says council member Sarah Kowalesky (Music, ‘01). “I want to share that with others.”
Despite their diverse backgrounds and interests, the council members do have some common traits. “They share an entrepreneurial spirit an excitement about their university,” says Michelle. “They're enthusiastic and invested in the future of MacEwan. And we’re looking forward to supporting them as they realize their vision.”
