Every November, Edmonton’s Edify (formerly Avenue) magazine announces its Top 40 Under 40 – a list of the young people who are shaping our city through their kindness, their passion, their creativity or their entrepreneurial spirits.

This year, four MacEwan alumni made the list, and we couldn’t be more proud.

Jonathan Kawchuk, Music Diploma ’12

From Edify: “When you think of the great recording studios, places like Abbey Road and Sun Studio come to mind. But, to Jonathan Kawchuk, an untouched natural environment is the perfect place to play and record his ethereal, experimental music. He’s scored films in Canada, the United States and Norway, and his album, North, is out through the Paper Bag Records label. A second album is in the works.” Read more.

Rebecca Nedelec, Bachelor of Commerce ’18

From Edify: “Ever since she was little, Rebecca Nedelec was inspired by her parents’ work with their own charity, Sustainable East Africa Education & Development Society. Years later, Nedelec’s bright but probing nature finds its creative outlet through her podcast, Nuance of Impact, that focuses on conversations about make-or-break moments of social change.” Read more.

Dr. John Neilson, Bachelor of Science Transfer ’01

From Edify: “Exploring neurology’s ever-expanding horizon is a lofty goal. Incorporating a business and taking out a loan to start your own practice — prior to graduation — is literally unheard of, at least in Canada.” Read more.

Anand Pye, Bachelor of Commerce ’11

From Edify: “By day, he supports the Edmonton area’s economic development as the executive director of NAIOP, the Commercial Real Estate Development Association’s local chapter. By night, Pye takes on a more creative role, using his business acumen to support emerging artists as the board president for the Grindstone Comedy Theatre & Bistro.” Read more.
