Racing for change

From Distinguished Alumni to Amazing Racer
MacEwan University was pleased to honour Dr. James Makokis by presenting him with the 2019 Distinguished Alumni award.
Recognizing artistic excellence
Two MacEwan grads are regional winners of the BMO 1st Art! competition, which recognizes excellence in the visual arts among Canadian undergraduate artists. The Alberta region winner is Preston Pavlis (Fine Art ’18), and Cheyenne Rain LeGrande (Fine Art ’16) is the winner for the British Columbia region. Both received a $7,500 prize.
This September, pianist Martin Mayer, Music ’11, will embark on a 20-city tour of China.
The Vancouver-based musician and composer is known for his instrumental fusion style, a symphonic blend of smooth jazz, classical, pop, rock and various styles of world music.
Michael Tash, BCom ’17, has turned his marketing degree and his passion for gaming into a career as a streamer and YouTube content creator. From his home in Spruce Grove, Michael creates content for the 350,000 people who subscribe to his channel.
Scoops of kindness
Paula Shyba, BA Transfer ’05, along with partners Nicole Bhar and Candyce Morris, serves up old-fashioned ice cream — and creates community — at their new Edmonton venture, Kind Ice Cream.
