The Peer Health Education Team (PHET) is a volunteer program at MacEwan University that strives to build a healthier campus for all.

Through peer-to-peer education, advocacy, and collaboration with campus and community members, the PHET encourages students to make healthy life choices in support of their academic and personal goals. The PHET views health holistically, knowing that there are many dimensions of wellness that impact health.

Role description

Peer Health Educators (PHEs) are at the core of campus health and wellness programming and are essential to the dissemination of relevant health and wellness information to students and MacEwan University members. Under the direction of the Wellness and Psychological Services Faculty, PHEs will help promote health and wellness at MacEwan University through various strategies and approaches.

The Peer Health Educators:

  • Assist with the implementation and evaluation of health promotion activities on campus. (Activities include, but not limited to: weekly table displays, in-class announcements, monthly wellness stations, weekly social media posts, etc.);

  • Participate in special events on campus (SAMU Resource Fair, New Student Orientation, Yoga Rave, Bell Let’s Talk, etc.);

  • Assist in the distributing health education materials;

  • Represent WPS in a respectful, professional and inclusive way;

  • Attend all required training sessions and meetings; and

  • Log their volunteer hours.

Eligibility

This volunteer opportunity is open to all MacEwan University students enrolled in at least their second year of a program during the current academic year and must be in good academic standing.

We are looking for dedicated individuals who want to contribute to the campus community in meaningful way through health promotion programming! Successful candidates will be people with flexible schedules, familiarity with campus life, strong communication skills and have a passion for health promotion!

Commitment requirements

  • PHE must be able to commit to both Fall and Winter semesters in the current academic year.

  • PHE must be able to dedicate up to five hours a week to plan and implement health promotion programming.

  • PHE are required to complete mandatory orientation training; dates to be determined.

  • PHE are expected to regularly attend bi-weekly meetings throughout the academic year; dates to be determined.
