Counselling services for students
Individual counselling is a goal-focused and collaborative activity between you and your counsellor to address a range of concerns that affect your well-being and academic performance. These may include stress, anxiety, feeling low, loneliness, relationship issues, eating concerns, addictions, and more.
Group therapy offers a supportive environment to learn strategies to improve your wellness in a multi-session group setting from a trained counsellor. To learn more about therapy groups we offer, contact Wellness and Psychological Services.
If you are accessing our services for the first time or are a returning client who has not accessed services in the past 6 months, please attend an initial consultation. An initial consultation (IC) is a free and confidential 20- to 30-minute conversation with a counsellor to explore your reasons for seeking help. At your IC you can:
Learn whether Wellness and Psychological Services is a good match for your needs.
Receive helpful resources specific to your concern.
Book follow-up appointments when appropriate.
Find information about treatment and therapy options if the service doesn’t meet your needs or availability is limited.
ICs are available as weekday, drop-in sessions on a first-come, first-served basis at City Centre Campus and by appointment at Alberta College Campus.
If you have attended an initial consultation within the past six months, you do not need to go through the process again.
You can set up an appointment by contacting reception in person or by phone or by contacting your counsellor directly to make an appointment.
In an effort to accommodate the needs of more students by reducing the number of unused appointments, WPS requires a minimum of 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or reschedule of appointments. If less than 24 hours’ notice is provided, pre-booked appointments are automatically cancelled and the following fees will apply:
1 late cancellation/no-show: $5
2 late cancellations/no-shows: $10
3+ late cancellations/no-shows: $20
All fees must be paid prior to scheduling future appointments. Fees can be paid, in cash only, at Wellness and Psychological Services.
Students are encouraged to discuss extensions, deferrals and withdrawals with their instructor prior to requesting documentation from Wellness and Psychological Services (WPS) staff. Please also be familiar with the Office of the University Registrar forms before requesting documentation from WPS.
