Dean/Chair Information on Course Evaluation

MacEwan University currently uses an online system called Blue for collecting student course evaluations.

Student Course Evaluation Process

As per section 11.5.2 of the collective agreement, "The University will conduct student course evaluation surveys for every course, with the exception of courses with an enrolment of six or fewer students."

Points of Interest:

  • The start and end date of a course survey is automatically generated based on the 'end date' of that course, as listed in PeopleSoft
  • In a course with multiple sections (i.e. LEC, LAB, SEM, FP, etc.), the instructor only needs to be evaluated in ONE component.
  • Chairs & Deans retain the ability to "Opt Out" the instructor

  • Track your response rate through the portal link:
  • Encourage students to complete the evaluation and let them know their feedback is valuable.
  • For useful suggestions, see Top 20 Strategies to Increase the Online Response Rates of Student Rating Scales (Berk, 2012)

Tracking response rates

You may want to track response rates to provide incentives or award points for participation in completing a course evaluation for your class. You can track response rates for online evaluations through the “Subject View Management” link for the course survey. Also, see instructions in above section on accessing real-time results.

Evaluation for a co-taught course

In the case of multiple instructors, the instructors are evaluated separately, generating more than one evaluation for that course.

Student Information

Student Information on Course Evaluation

MacEwan University currently uses an online system, called Blue, for collecting student course evaluations. All courses with more than six students will have a course evaluation survey.

Confidential results

The online system does not release individual student responses to instructors, administrators, or other students. The Faculty Evaluation Coordinator for MacEwan University is able to connect demographic data from the student database to individual student responses to be sure the system is working equally well for all participants, but analyses are only ever reported as group data.

Timing of results

Instructors do not have access to their course evaluation reports until after grades have been submitted.

Reminders to complete course evaluations.

An email reminder signifies you still have one or more course evaluations to complete. Separate emails are sent for each evaluation. Once you submit all your available evaluations, you will no longer receive reminders.
