COVID-19 Updates: Sport and Wellness

August 21, 2020

August 21, 2020

Our fitness area retrofit is nearing completion, and we’re getting closer to opening our facility for our students, staff, members, and public. We are confident you will love our new dedicated stretching area, personal training zone, testing room and expanded cardio space in the fitness centre. We have also updated some strength pieces and spin bikes.

Our target date is September 8 to reopen our fitness centre, gymnasium and pool. In addition to these areas, we created an additional workout space, the circuit studio, on the second floor that will house our weight machines.

We continue to follow the Alberta Health Services, university and industry standards to get ready for your safe return to our facility.

Reopening

We suggest patrons reserve a workout or swim time online starting in September. Reservations in the fitness centre are 80 minutes of exercise time followed by 10 minutes of cleaning by staff. Pool reservations are 30- or 45-minute sessions. If you do not reserve your workout, you can drop in to see if space is available. If there's room in your desired workout space, you will be welcome to come in. If we are at capacity, you will have to wait or book another time to ensure physical distancing.

As the change rooms are only for pool users at this time, we suggest guests come prepared to work out.

Visitors will be allowed to bring a small bag for outdoor shoes and clothing with them in the facility.

Fitness Centre Hours

Monday to Friday: 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. (closed 1:30 to 2 p.m. for deep cleaning)
Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (closed 12:30 to 1 p.m. for deep cleaning)

Pool Hours

Saturday, Sunday and holidays: 1 to 4:30 p.m.

Safety Measures

Our reopening plans focus on the safety and comfort of our clients, and will incorporate safety measures that meet and exceed government recommendations.

Physical Distancing

Reduced Access: Following provincial guidelines, we have reduced occupancy levels in each facility (fitness centre, pool and gymnasium) and in our classes and programs.

Distance: Staff, members and guests are required to maintain 6 feet (2 metres) distance.

Equipment: Equipment has been spaced out to ensure your safety while using the fitness area. Additionally, a new area has been created for you with a strength circuit utilizing our line of strength machines.

Booking Sessions: Be it a workout, training session, drop-in gymnasium time or laps in the pool, all visits to Sport and Wellness will require reservations. Walk-ins will only be allowed if space is available. Priority will be given to booked appointments, but if you are late, your spot could be given to a walk-in.

Change Rooms: Change room capacity is reduced and access, including showers, is limited to pool users only. Users of the gymnasium and fitness centre must come dressed for their workout.

Safety and Cleaning Protocols

Wellness Checks: Before coming to the facility, staff and patrons are asked to screen themselves using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist. If you say yes to anything on the checklist, stay home.

Cleaning: A deep clean of the fitness facility will occur twice a day. Additionally, the following new cleaning protocols will be implemented:

Weight and Machine Cleaning: Members are required to wipe down fitness equipment before and after use with a saturated towel. Each member will be provided their own bottle of approved cleaner (or disinfectant) and cleaning towels. Hand sanitizer is also available throughout the facility. Sport and Wellness staff will also regularly clean used equipment.

Surface Cleaning: High-touch surfaces will be disinfected regularly throughout the day by staff.

PPE and Staff Training: All staff have been trained on safety, cleaning and emergency response procedures. Staff will make every effort to maintain the standard physical distancing requirements at all times; in situations where that is not possible, they will wear an approved mask.

Masks: Masks are required when in the facility and to and from your point of exercise. Please note that Alberta Health Services highly discourages wearing a mask during periods of intense physical or cardio exercise (see page 3 of linked document).

Protective Barriers:
Barriers have been installed at any front-facing desk.

Contactless Pay: Though cash will be accepted, we strongly encourage debit and credit card payments.

Sanitizing Stations: Hand-sanitizing stations will be available throughout the facility.

Studios: Fitness studios and equipment will be deep cleaned after each class.

Water Fountains: Members are encouraged to bring water bottles. Only water filling will be allowed at fountains.
