24/7 Fitness on Demand

MacEwan student members have unlimited access to a new virtual fitness class platform they can experience at their convenience on their phones, computers or TVs.

Sport and Wellness Closure until New Year

In the university’s efforts to do their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 and protect the health and safety of our entire community by limiting numbers and time on campus, Sport and Wellness will remain closed until January 4. The announcement was made in response to the Alberta Government’s state of public health emergency announcement on November 24. All memberships will be automatically extended to this date.

Please note that no cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Sport and Wellness. The health and safety measures in place on campus meet and exceed the standards of Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Occupational Health and Safety. Sport and Wellness is a safe place to visit in the New Year.

Even though our physical doors are closed we understand the importance of staying active during these stressful times, so we continue to encourage our MacEwan students, members and pass holders to take advantage of our virtual fitness options.

What you can do to keep everyone safe

Perform a Wellness Check: Before coming to the facility, staff and patrons are asked to screen themselves using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist. If you say yes to anything on the checklist, stay home.

Maintain Your Distance: Maintain a 2 m distance between yourself and others and follow the facility signage.

Wear your Masks: Masks are required when in the facility and to and from your point of exercise. Please note that Alberta Health Services highly discourages wearing a mask during periods of intense physical or cardio exercise (see page 3 of linked document) or while swimming.

Clean Before and After:
Members are required to wipe down fitness equipment before and after use with a saturated towel. Each member will be provided their own bottle of approved cleaner (or disinfectant) and cleaning towels. Hand sanitizer is also available throughout the facility. Sport and Wellness staff will also regularly clean used equipment.

Come Dressed to Exercise: Change room capacity is reduced and access, including showers, is limited to pool users only. Users of the gymnasium and fitness centre must come dressed for their workout. Pool users should arrive wearing their swim wear under their street clothes. Visitors will be allowed to bring a small bag for outdoor shoes and clothing with them in the facility.

Clean Your Hands: Use sanitizing stations throughout the facility or wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds.

What to Bring:
Members are encouraged to bring water bottles. Only water filling will be allowed at fountains. Label your bottle, unmarked bottles left behind will not be kept. Patrons will be allowed to bring clean, small items such as mats, bands, and pool toys.

What we're doing to keep you safe

Physical Distancing

Reduced Access: Following provincial guidelines, we have reduced occupancy levels in each facility (fitness centre, pool and gymnasium) and in our classes and programs.

Distancing: Staff are required to maintain 6 feet (2 metres) distance. Directional signage and physical distancing markers have been installed throughout the facility.

Equipment has been spaced out to ensure your safety while using the fitness area. Additionally, a new area has been created for you with a strength circuit utilizing our line of strength machines. Lesson and class equipment will not be shared. Patrons will be allowed to bring clean, small items such as mats, bands, and pool toys.

Safety and Cleaning Protocols

Wellness Checks: Before coming to the facility, staff will screen themselves using the Alberta Health Daily Checklist.

Cleaning: A deep clean of the facility will occur twice a day. Additionally, the following new cleaning protocols will be implemented:

Weight and Machine Cleaning: Sport and Wellness staff will also regularly clean used equipment and we will close the facility each day for deep cleaning.

Surface Cleaning: High-touch surfaces will be disinfected regularly throughout the day by staff.

PPE and Staff Training: All staff have been trained on safety, cleaning and emergency response procedures. Staff will make every effort to maintain the standard physical distancing requirements at all times.

Masks and Face Coverings: Staff will wear masks and face shields throughout the facility.

Protective Barriers: Barriers have been installed at any front-facing desk.

Contactless Pay: Though cash will be accepted, we strongly encourage debit and credit card payments.

Sanitizing Stations: Hand-sanitizing stations will be available throughout the facility.

Studios: Fitness studios and equipment will be deep cleaned after each class.

Water Fountains: Only water filling will be allowed at fountains.

The relationship between the people getting trained and the staff who interact with them is something I’ve never experienced in other centres. It feels as if everyone is rooting for you to succeed.
