The majority of MacEwan University's courses are being offered online, with a mix of hybrid courses (a combination of online and and face-to-face delivery) and in-person delivery. The university’s first priority in making this decision is to protect the health and safety of our students and employees.
Instructors may include any number of methods to engage students given the circumstances of individual courses. Some “online” courses have times/dates listed: instructors will determine if and when students should log in and access course content, or if students can view content at their leisure. Instructors will communicate this information to students closer to the beginning of the Winter term.
Hybrid and face-to-face delivery
To ensure that our students receive the best learning outcomes, some courses are delivered using a hybrid model, using a combination of online and face-to-face delivery.
Other courses will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Examples of these courses include fine and performing arts programming and labs. Where courses will be delivered face-to-face on campus, we have put measures in place to keep students and faculty safe while they are on campus.
In order to protect the health and safety of our community, course delivery mode may be changed during the term if the pandemic situation worsens or infection rates increase.

There is no change in tuition: while the course delivery mode may be different, the tuition costs remain the same. MacEwan has have always charged the same rate for tuition, regardless of modality. Our faculty and teams have worked to ensure that courses are re-designed to allow for students to be successful within the new delivery formats.
Medical Clinic fee
The Medical Clinic fee will remain as the clinic continues to be open to students.
Registrarial and Information Technology fees
These fees remain in place as work continues in supporting students with the delivery of in-person and online classes.
Sport and Wellness fee
This fee applies to all students except those in a program offered at a campus outside of Edmonton, regardless of class delivery format. To support students and their overall wellbeing, MacEwan Sport and Wellness will offer online programming.
The following fees are collected by the university on behalf of SAMU. Questions related to SAMU fees, membership or services should be directed to SAMU.

After consultation with transit and post-secondary partners, it was decided that U-Pass will not be offered for Fall Term. More information on transit fees for students can be found on the City of Edmonton’s website.

The university will provide letter grades for courses. These grades remain the most meaningful indicator of student achievement.
Continuing students who do not want to take online classes may take time away from their studies. If a continuing student is away from their studies for 12 months, they will be discontinued from their program. To return to MacEwan, the student must re-apply and meet admission requirements to return.
Deferring admission for incoming first-year students
Domestic students Incoming students can not defer admission. Admission is valid only for the term to which an applicant has applied.
International applicants should contact MacEwan International for guidance on admission, border restrictions and immigration.
Refunds on Admission Confirmation Deposit
Current refund policies apply.
International students can receive a full refund of their Admission Confirmation Deposit if they are unable to commence their studies due to COVID-19 restrictions. International applicants should contact MacEwan International for guidance on seeking a refund.
The availability of these opportunities will depend on the number of positions offered by external organizations. Students should contact their program with any questions or concerns.

Online courses are offered using Blackboard Learn. Students get access to their courses on the first day of class.
Access your course(s) at myPortal.MacEwan.ca. Log in with your MacEwan UserID and password. Click on “Blackboard Learn” under Quick Links and then select the course link under “My Courses.” You can also watch a video on Finding and Accessing Your Blackboard Courses. To get an overview of online and tips for successful learning online, enrol in the Blackboard Student Orientation Course. You must be logged into the student portal to access the course.
The university will not approve any international travel by students for university purposes (as defined by the Travel Policy) until after June 30, 2021. This restriction on travel aligns with advice from Alberta Health Services and the Government of Canada. The university will continue to monitor this issue and will reassess student travel abroad in spring 2021.
All inbound student-exchange programming for students coming to MacEwan on Temporary Resident Visas (TRVs) or electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs) is cancelled. Inbound exchange students planning to come to MacEwan on a study permit may be able to attend. Contact MacEwan International for more information and guidance.
Students on Clinical/Field Placement
MacEwan University’s first priority is to protect the health and safety of our students and employees. We continue to follow the recommendations of the Chief Medical Officer of Health and Alberta Health Services in making decisions related to our operations related to COVID-19.
The information below is specific to students in the Faculty of Health and Community Studies and Faculty of Nursing.
Due to the current pandemic, field placement and clinical opportunities may be modified, replaced, or suspended with little to no notice should the university/placement organization determine there is a risk to the health and safety of students, staff and the community.
Student clinical and field placement opportunities are dependent on the ability of our partner organizations to accommodate students on-site. During this time, unforeseen circumstances may occur that impact the availability, number, variety and scope of clinicals and field placements that are available for students. As a result, some programs have deferred courses or moved this component to virtual delivery, others have a combination of virtual/on-site, and for others it is on-site.
Please note that other constraints may be imposed while in practicum or clinical with little notice – this will require flexibility and adaptation to changing conditions within partner organizations and at the university. We must also recognize that individuals or student groups may be impacted differently as the constraints may be specific to the site they are working on.
We know that uncertainty can be unsettling; however, quick responses may be necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of all of us and the communities we serve.
It is important to recognize that these unknown and changing conditions may have an impact, not only on your current placement, but also on the timeline to complete your program. Your program completion is our top priority; however, we ask for your understanding as these changes are often beyond MacEwan’s control. We are making every effort to adjust schedules to achieve the planned outcomes for your courses and program in as timely a manner as possible.
The health and safety of our communities is a shared responsibility. We ask you to not put yourself or others at risk and ensure you follow the health and safety measures in place by staying home if you are symptomatic and to report as required.
